Two-time defending gold medalist fencer and Beaverton, OR native Mariel Zagunis has been selected to honor the United States of America as the lone American olympian to bear the stars and stripes for her country as part of the opening ceremonies at the 2012 summer Olympics in London, England.
Zagunis, known by many as the best fencer in the world, is looking for her third-straight gold medal with the sabre. Her gold medal in Athens back in 2004 was the first for any American fencer in 100 years. Than in Beijing in 2008, she again took the gold medal, one of six medals the U.S. fencing team won at those games. Her successes continued after Beijing, winning 2009 and 2010 World Championships after taking silver last year.
