College World Series Scores: Oregon State Defeats Belmont In Baton Rouge Regional

The No. 2 seed Oregon St. Beavers knocked off the Belmont Bruins in their opening game of the 2012 College World Series. Despite reeling off only three hits on the afternoon the Beavers executed nicely in the middle innings against Belmont starter Chase Brookshire, scratching out a 2-1 victory.

Ryan Barnes was the hero on Friday. He led off the second inning with a double and was moved over to third base on a sacrifice bunt. Barnes then came in to score on a sacrifice fly from Kavin Keyes, giving OSU an early 1-0 lead.

Belmont tied the game up in the fifth inning. Dylan Craig led off the inning with a triple down the right field line and scored on a groundout from Zac Mitchell.

The Beavers took the lead in the sixth. Joey Matthews doubled and moved into third on a groundout. Following an intentional walk, Barnes came to the plate and laid down a perfect squeeze bunt that scored Matthews from third, giving Oregon State a 2-1 lead they would not relinquish.

Jace Fry made the start for OSU and worked five innings, allowing just one run to score on four hits and three walks. Tony Bryant and Matt Boyd combined to work the final four innings, allowing just two hits and not issuing a single walk. Boyd struck out four in his 2.1 innings of work.

The Beavers will face the winner of LSU vs. Louisiana-Monroe on Saturday at 8 p.m. ET.
