French Open 2012: Serena Williams Upset In First Round

The French Open will have to continue without Serena Williams.

The fifth-seeded Williams fell 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 to Virginie Razzano in the first round of the French Open today, marking the first time Williams has ever been defeated in the first round of a major tournament.

Razzano, the 111th ranked woman in the world, defeated Williams to register the biggest win of her career and one of the biggest upsets in women's Grand Slam history.

Williams took the first set, but could never give Razzano the knockout blow as Razzano continued to gain confidence as the match continued. When Williams had the opportunity to end the match in straight sets, a resilient Razzano fought back from a 5-1 deficit in the tiebreaker to take the second set and send Williams to her chair in tears during the set break.

Serena and her sister Venus were looking forward to getting back on the French Open stage after missing last year's tournament but unlike Venus - who won her first round match on Monday - Serena will not be moving on.
