As the MLS playoffs quickly approach, the Seattle Sounders are looking to claim a top seed in the final stretch of the season. Seattle furthered its efforts with a 3-0 win against the rival Portland Timbers on Sunday, moving the Sounders (52 points, 14-7-10 record) up in the 2012 MLS standings and past the LA Galaxy (50 points, 15-12-5 record) to third place in the Western Conference.
Meanwhile, the San Jose Earthquakes (64 points, 19-6-7 record) and Real Salt Lake (55 points, 17-11-4 record) keep their respective positions in the standings as the first and second-place teams with victories on Saturday.
The win over Portland was the first for the Sounders since Sept. 8 against Chivas USA. Seattle was 0-1-2 in its previous three contests.
To wrap up the regular season schedule, the Sounders will take on Real Salt Lake, FC Dallas and Los Angeles as they look to prepare for the playoffs.
