The Oregon State Beavers trail the UCLA Bruins 7-3 at the end of the first quarter. The Beavers ate up just over half of the quarter for their field goal, while the Bruins responded in less than two minutes with a touchdown.
UCLA received the opening kickoff but managed to advance the ball only 27 yards on six plays. Johnathon Franklin moved the chains well for the Bruins on the drive, but the Beaver defense made a stop on 3rd-on-10 to force the punt.
The Beavers then put together a 17-play drive that resulted in the aforementioned field goal. Quarterback Sean Manninon passed for 75 yards on five-of-eight completions while running back Terron Ward recorded 13 yards on eight carries. Ward will need to do better and average more than two yards per carry to keep the chains moving over the next three quarters.
Kicker Trevor Roamine hit a 25-yard field goal with just under three minutes left in the period to give the Beavers the game's first score and an early lead.
The Bruins, however, came right back behind the arm of Richard Brehaut. He used a huge 62-yard completion to Josh Smith and a 22-yard touchdown pass to Taylor Embree to give UCLA the 7-3 lead.
The Beavers open the second quarter with possession.
