The 2011 Seafair Hydroplane Races is underway, and so far things are progressing just as one would think as Heat 1A is in the books. Dave Villwock in the U-96 took a commanding lead after the first turn and never let up from there. He maintained the lead and cruised to victory.
Behind Villwock, Kip Brown took second in the U-17. He barely held off Brian Perkins down the stretch, who placed third in the U-21 and made it an interesting battle for the second and third spots.
Scott Liddycoat in the U-7 was antsy early and it affected his race. Liddycoat had to ease off of the start line at the start of the race, and his necessary cautiousness served as a disadvantage in the early stages of the contest when Villwock, Brown and Perkins sped off. Liddycoat never made up ground on the top-3 and finished the day in fourth.
Mark Evans (U-57) and Ken Muscatel (U-25) rounded out the group with finishes of fifth and sixth, respectively.
