Greg Halman Dies: Cousin Writes To Fans, MLBPA Release Statement

On Lookout Landing under the username langer11, one of Greg Halman's cousins wrote a post geared towards the fans and Mariners organization on behalf of his family:

Dear Seattle Mariners fans:

This morning I received the message that my beloved cousin Greg Halman passed away. I don't know for sure, but I thought this was the right place to let you know. I know Greg and his family loved the Mariners organization and the way they supported him throughout the years. If you want to show you compassion to his family, I will show it to them when the time is right.

Halman, a Mariners outfielder who had been with the organization since he was 17-years-old, was stabbed to death in his native Netherlands early this morning.

There has been outpouring of consoling words and support as word has spread of the 24-year-old's passing. Michael Weiner, executive director of the Major League Baseball Players Association, issued the following statement:

"We are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic death of Greg Halman. Greg was passionate about the game of baseball and generously gave of himself to share his passion with others in an attempt to help grow the sport's popularity across Europe. He will be sorely missed. ... Our thoughts and prayers go out to Greg's family, his teammates, the Mariners organization and his many friends and fans throughout Europe and America."

Please check Lookout Landing and SB Nation Seattle for updates on this tragic story.
