The Oregon St. Beavers are still winless on the season. And their prospects of going winless on the season are higher than ever.
The Beavers defense created most of the points for their offense in their loss to the Arizona St. Sun Devils. In fact, all 20 of Oregon State's points came off of Arizona State turnovers. Brock Osweiler threw two interceptions early to Jordan Poyer and fumbled the ball early to provide Oregon State with three scoring drives and 13 points. OSU needed to drive a total of 68 yards to score 13 points. Oregon State's defense was pretty impressive against Arizona State, as they only allowed one third down conversion while sacking Osweiler four times.
Unfortunately for Mike Riley's Beavers, they got penalized. A lot. Oregon State had 139 penalty yards, some of which made ASU drives all the easier to traverse. The Beavers also coughed the ball up five times, offsetting the four turnovers ASU produced. ASU couldn't capitalize off those turnovers, but they stalled Beaver drives late.
OSU quarterback Sean Mannion ended up throwing an incredible 66 passes and managed 40 completions (the Beavers had virtually no run game to speak of, piling up 47 rushing yards), but many of the completions could've been interceptions. I've never seen a football game where a quarterback threw 25 pickable balls until tonight. Mannion still managed four interceptions, three in the fourth quarter when trying to rally his team back.
Oregon State is running out of winnable games on their schedule before the heavy-hitters come their way. The Beavers will play Arizona next week at home, but after that things get hard, fast.
