The Seattle Sounders surprised everyone with their second pick on Thursday, selecting defender Juan Cruz with the 21st pick in the MLS SuperDraft. Cruz, from Southern Methodist University, adds depth to the Sounders’ central defense. With only Jeff Parke and Patrick Ianni fully-healthy, and Jhon Kennedy Hurtado returning from injury, Cruz likely provides a boost, and gives the Sounders options in the future at center back.
Cruz appeared in 17 games for the Mustangs in 2010, scoring a goal and tallying three assists. In his career at SMU, he’s appeared in 67 games, scoring nine goals and tallying five assists. He also earned All-Conference USA honors in 2010, the second time he received the honors.
The Sounders, after back-to-back picks, have a bit to regroup before their final three picks. Seattle still holds two picks in the second round — No. 27 and No. 29 — and a third round pick — No. 47.
