Russell Okung's Agent Ensures Us He Is Trying

With training camp one day away, the Seattle Seahawks have yet to sign sixth overall pick Russell Okung. It would be an understatement to say that tension is mounting. The date at which Okung begins smacking pads with teammate's could decided the fate of the Seahawks season. Even one missed practice could set the four-year starter at Oklahoma State irretrievably behind his peers. One needs only to remember Walter Jones to recognize just how vital training camp can be a for a left tackle.

Luckily for Seahawks fans, one noble soul is trying his best to reach an agreement. According to NewsOK.com, Okung's agent has been working his hardest to get Okung into camp on time.

"We've had discussions every day for the last two weeks,” agent Peter Schaffer said Wednesday. "If he won't be on the field, it won't be for a lack of effort on our part.”

Rookie contracts are typically the most variable and complex of a player's career. Sure, they are almost entirely decided by order of selection, and sure, within that framework there is little but superficial changes like bonus types, but only a fool underestimates the difference between a starter bonus and a roster bonus. Negotiating a rookie contract is very much like constructing the Paris Peace Accord.
