The buzz in this case sounds rather like a vuvuzela, centering around Uruguayan international Alvaro Fernandez. The midfielder is currently signed to Nacional but was on loan to Universidad de Chile (which, despite the name, is a professional football club) last season.
↵According to reports from Uruguay, Fernandez is set to sign a contract with the Sounders tomorrow. Nicknamed El Flaco (skinny), Fernandez is tall and speedy. He played in four of La Celeste’s seven World Cup matches, actually starting in the match against Ghana, although he was subbed off after 46 minutes.
↵While Seattle could certainly use a box-to-box midfielder capable of both defending and attacking, I can’t help but wonder why they are pursuing the least attractive Uruguayan in existence. Yet once he becomes a Sounder, I’m sure he’ll look simply radiant. Rave green flatters everyone.
↵(For what it’s worth, the Seattle Sounders have issued a statement reminding all of us that they are exploring their options and will make an announcement when a move is made.)
