Catcher Eliezer Alfonzo raised eyebrows in his first two games as a Seattle Mariner, with five hits in nine games, including a home run. For an organization desperate for offense, many believed Alfonzo would stick around. But after that, he only managed to connect with the ball four times, and the Mariners designated him for assignment today.
↵Josh Bard has been activated to replace Alfonzo. He’s been on the disabled list with a strained calf, but played seven games in Tacoma, hitting one home run. And he hit a home run with the Mariners as well, so there’s that. In addition, he can actually catch the ball, which is usually considered a plus for the position of catcher. (Take note, Rob Johnson.)
