2011 NIT Bracket, Schedule: NIT Kicks Off On Tuesday; Washington State Plays Wednesday

In case you missed the NIT Selection Show, SB Nation has compiled the entire NIT bracket and schedule. The NIT begins on Tuesday and continues on Wednesday, when the Washington State Cougars will make a grand entrance into the tournament, facing Long Beach State in Pullman. Alabama, Boston College, Colorado and Virginia Tech received No. 1 seeds in the NIT and are guaranteed hosting duties throughout the tournament ahead of the Final Four at Madison Square Garden.

Washington State has a fun path to the Final Four, beginning with Long Beach State on Wednesday. If the Cougars will, they’ll host either Harvard or Oklahoma State in the second round. Harvard missed the NCAA Tournament by a fraction of an inch on Saturday, losing to Princeton in a one-game playoff for the Ivy League title and automatic NCAA Tournament bid. The Crimson are the easy upset pick in the NIT, with experts already predicting Harvard will knock-off Oklahoma State.

Boston College has the top-seed in the Cougars’ region and will take-on McNeese State in the first round. Northwestern is the No. 4 seed, set to face No. 5 Milwaukee. The Cougars would have to beat Long Beach State, Harvard/Oklahoma State and one of the top-half teams to earn a trip to Madison Square Garden. It’s a long road, but Washington State has a good chance at a deep postseason run in the NIT.

NIT Selection Show 2011: NIT Bracket, Seeding For Washington State Cougars

The Washington State Cougars missed out on the NCAA Tournament with a disappointing finish to the 2011 season, but that doesn't mean the Cougs will miss the postseason entirely. Instead, the Cougars were officially invited to the NIT, joining the field of 32 in the race to Madison Square Garden. The NIT bracket was revealed on the NIT Selection Show on Sunday evening, and the Cougars received a No. 2 seed and will face Long Beach State.

Location: The Cougars will host a first round game as is customary for NIT teams. The higher seed plays host throughout the tournament until the field is down to the Final Four, which is played at Madison Square Garden.

Region: The top seed in the Cougars' region is Boston College. Instead of regions named geographically, like the NCAA Tournament, the NIT simply names its No. 1 seed and calls it good. In fact, on the selection show, regions were named "top-right," "bottom-left" and so on.

Seed: The Cougars were somewhat close to the NCAA Tournament and expected to be a high seed in the NIT. They got just that, receiving a No. 2 seed in the tornament.

Schedule: The first round matchup will be played on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Potential second round matchup: The winner of the Washington State-Long Beach State game will face the winner of the Harvard-Oklahoma State game. Harvard is a No. 6 seed after just missing the NCAA Tournament in the Ivy League one-game playoff. Oklahoma State is a No. 3 seed.
