Seahawks' Bruce Irvin Already "Opening Plenty of Eyes," Per Report

With Seahawks presumptive starting LEO defensive end Chris Clemons holding out of mini-camps and OTAs for a better contract, rookie Bruce Irvin has gotten plenty of reps with the first team unit, and according to Pro Football Weekly, has already impressed.

"A lot of people thought he'd be a one-trick pony - just a pure speed edge rusher," they write. "You can't help but notice his speed and explosiveness right off the bat. But he's already shown that there's more to his game."

PFW continues, "One particularly striking example in a late-May OTA was the eye-popping countermove the sleek Irvin put on Breno Giacomini that literally floored the massive tackle. "It was really something to see; it made an instant impression," the observer said."

People say that 'speed kills', but ultimately, Irvin will need a solid repertoire of moves to succeed in the NFL. If speed and a quick first step are all he can offer, QBs will just adjust by stepping up into the pocket, rolling away from his side, and tackles will push Irvin back and wash him out of the play. Counter and inside moves, a bullrush, a spin move, a swim more or all of the above will help him become unpredictable and, hopefully, very effective.
