With the 18th pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the San Diego Chargers have selected Melvin Ingram, a linebacker/defensive end from the South Carolina Gamecocks. Many had thought the Seattle Seahawks would take Ingram if available to them at the 12th pick.

Sports Illustrated's prospect scouting database provides a succinct analysis on Ingram as a prospect:

Ingram was highly regarded by NFL scouts entering the season and elevated almost every aspect of his game as a senior. He's a playmaking defensive front seven prospect who can be used at several positions and has the ability to create a lot of problems for opponents. Ingram needs to play hard on every down, but should be an immediate starter at the next level. He moves toward the draft with a lot of momentum.

The Chargers' next pick is in the second round, No. 49 overall.
