The Seahawks did not start their opening preseason game well, but the second and third units were able to make a furious comeback in the second half to give Seattle a 24-17 victory. Here was some of the post-game reaction from around the blogosphere:
The first-team defense did not look particularly good. After taking over on their own 11 yard line, the Chargers marched up the field for 89 yards on 10 plays, including a 48-yard bomb from Philip Rivers to none other than Vincent Jackson (who was being marked by none other than Kelly Jennings, of course). The drive was capped by an 8-yard touchdown catch and run by Mike Tolbert to put the Chargers up 7-0.
On the offensive side, I came away pretty impressed with Charlie Whitehurst. He played large portions of the 2nd and 3rd Quarters -- five series. I realize that this is the preseason and he was facing the B-squad defense, but his general disposition and body language looked better than I remember from last season. He stood tall in the pocket, threw some good balls, and worked through his progressions on a few occasions. He scrambled 8 yards for a first down on one play and demonstrated good mobility on a few others. He wasn't perfect, but he looked good. I'll take it, preseason or not.
So what's the real lesson to take from tonight? Judge the process, not the results. Despite the limited snaps, Tarvaris Jackson has shown no real improvement from his middling Minnesota days. Despite facing a lesser defense, Charlie Whitehurst has shown some capability of being an NFL quarterback. It's only preseason, but we have just three weeks till that stops being an excuse. Show me something, Tarvaris.

Player of the Game: Thomas Clayton. There were a lot of candidates for the Seahawks, but the third-year running back scored the game-winner - on a 25-yard touchdown run with 3 minutes to play - had a game-high 62 rushing yards and also added an 11-yard run to the Chargers' 5-yard line on the TD drive that tied the score at 17.
Russell Okung wasn't even a series into his second season when things took what has become a familiar turn for the worse.
"It was non-contact," coach Pete Carroll said. "Just to hear something kind of pop in there. X-rays were negative and all that, so we'll see what happens. He's real disappointed."

The Seattle Seahawks weren't even five minutes into their opening preseason game against the San Diego Chargers before potentially having a serious injury to one of their starters. Prized left tackle Russell Okung was hurt on the first series of the game and limped off the field before immediately getting attention from the team's trainers.
LT Russell Okung is standing up in front of the bench, hopping in place.
After undergoing observations for a few moments, Okung was carted off the field. It appears the injury is to his left ankle, which is the same ankle that cost him the first few games of the 2010 season. The former sixth overall pick has been a monster on the field when healthy, though it appears that he may be banged up once again to start this year.
Stay tuned to SB Nation Seattle for complete updates on Russell Okung and his injury. For more Seahawks, be sure to check out Field Gulls.

The San Diego Chargers signed recently Seahawks roster casulty and undrafted free agent guard Michael Huey to a three-year deal today. T Nick Richmond was released to make room for the former Texas Longhorn. Huey was released by the Seahawks on August 3rd.
Signed rookie guard Michael Huey from the University of Texas to a three-year contract. Huey will wear No. 64.
Huey, 6'4, 304, started 12 games in his four years at Texas and was named honorable mention All-Big 12 in 2010. He is unlikely to play against the Seahawks on Thursday due to lack of preparation, but it would be something interesting to watch if he indeed was given the chance.

The Seahawks have announced several injuries that will keep players out of Thursday night's matchup against the Chargers. Wide receiver Mike Williams will not play due to a strained toe suffered on Monday, per Liz Mathews. Mathews notes, and John Boyle confirms, that rookie wide receiver Kris Durham will sit out with a pulled hamstring, defensive tackle Kentwan Balmer with a stinger, and defensive end Red Bryant, with a lingering knee issue.
Pete Carroll was quick to point out that Bryant's status is not injury related, but rather that they're bringing him along slowly after last season's year-ending MCL surgery, as Big Red hasn't fully recovered or gotten into football shape.
Durham is a rookie receiver that is battling to prove he's worth this 4th round selection, so this injury comes at a bad time. Same goes for Kentwan Balmer, who is most likely a bubble player at this point, and will need every snap he can get to prove he deserves a roster spot.
Also of note, John Boyle reports that Tarvaris Jackson will start at quarterback for the Seahawks on Thursday, but Pete Carroll hasn't decided whether the new Seahawks free agent signings, Alan Branch, Sidney Rice, and Zach Miller, among others, will be ready to go for the first preseason game.

The Seahawks face off against the San Diego Chargers on Thursday evening, so make sure you set your TiVos, VHS, camcorders pointed at the TV bootleg style,-- whatever it is you use to record your favorite programs.
Location: San Diego
Stadium: Qualcomm Stadium
Expected Temperature: 67 degrees, partly cloudy
TV: ESPN (that's a sporting news television channel, I believe)
Time: 5:00PM PST
Radio: 710ESPN (AM Dial) / 97.3 KIRO (FM Dial)
The lockout is over, sh*t is about to get real. Full pads, full speed, no-holds-barred, battle-to-the-death, cage-match, gladiator, thunderdome, all those cliches.
Other Things To Expect:
Beer commercials.
Truck commericials.
Commercials featuring guys wearing flannel, mustaches, jeans, probably Brett Favre, chicks in bikinis, and probably financial and retirement related things.
Commercials for the NFL, with the latest hip songs.
Things featuring patriotism and American flags, because this is 'Merica, dammit. Also, if you're between the ages of 17-34, expect to get recruited by the military.
Finally, interspersed into all those commercials, a football game will happen. In that, you can expect to see a bunch of sloppy, disorganized, ugly, football. Lots of penalties, false starts, and god forbid, probably a few injuries. This is the effect we'll see from what's being called the Lockout Hangover. Just prepare yourselves. Strap in. Buckle up. Put on your big boy pants. Hold on to your butts. More cliches.
