If you’re not watching Saturday night’s NBA playoff matchup between the Denver Nuggets and Oklahoma City Thunder, you may want to tune-in. It’s not necessarily the game that’s the story for Seattle, it’s the show of support from a few intrepid fans behind the Thunder bench. If you take a gander at the row immediately behind the bench, you’ll see a familiar, and comforting, sight: Sonicsgate and 206hoops, decked out in green and gold.
The Sonicsgate crew, and a few friends, are representing Seattle strong in Denver, holding up Sonics jerseys, wearing head-to-toe Sonics colors and even bringing Gary Payton along for the ride — a cardboard headshot cut-out, of course. The cowbells are ringing, as well, and can be heard clearly on the ESPN broadcast. It’s not the first time Sonicsgate has traveled to support the cause, but may be the most high-profile, considering the stage and location of the seats.
Check out the game on ESPN and keep an eye out for those Sonics colors on the right-hand side of your screen. Excellent work by Sonicsgate and 206hoops for raising the money to make the trip and showing up in-force.

In Sacramento, the ringing of cowbells has become synonymous with Kings fans. At Arco Arena, cowbells ring-out as the Kings take the floor, with fans showing their support using the distinct sounds the instrument makes. As the Maloof brothers attempt to move the team, fans continue to let their cowbells ring while making their voices heard, all in an effort to keep their team where it belongs. It’s something we know all too well here in Seattle.
On Saturday, as Sonicsgate travels to Denver, Seattle will stand with Sacramento fans, who are putting together a last-ditch effort to keep the Kings from relocating to Anaheim. Clay Bennett, head of the NBA relocation committee, will be there, making Game 3 the perfect time to show support for the Kings cause. And what better way to do it than symbolically, with cowbells ringing at Pepsi Center?
We’ll be following the Sonicsgate trip to Denver for Game 3 of the NBA playoff series between the Nuggets and Oklahoma City Thunder in this StoryStream. Stay with us as we update the latest news from the trip and the plans of those heading to Denver.

This weekend, we'll be doing something a little different as we cover Game 3 of the NBA playoff series between the Denver Nuggets and Oklahoma City Thunder. But why would we cover the Thunder, a team that invokes so many memories and still gets the blood of Seattle boiling? After all, our city and community still has a special hatred for Clay Bennett, owner of the Thunder, after the Seattle Sonics were taken away and re-branded.
The game is a subplot, and won't be the focus of our coverage. Instead, we'll be following the Sonicsgate journey to Denver. The Sonicsgate put out a call about a week ago, asking fans to send in donations in an effort to raise enough money to fund a trip to Denver. Sonics fans answered and the necessary funding limit was hit, allowing Sonicsgate to make the trip and bring awareness to the cause.
Since releasing the Sonicsgate documentary, the producers have made it their mission to keep the Sonics alive and bring an NBA team back to Seattle. It's not just a documentary. Sonicsgate has become a movement and a rallying cry for fans in Seattle who miss the Sonics and want a team back.
On Saturday, Sonicsgate will be at it again, decked out in green and gold in Denver as the Nuggets and Thunder go at it. They'll be at the arena, with prime seats and maximum visibility in front of a national audience.
Stay with this StoryStream as we chronicle the journey this week. We'll be back with much more on Sonicsgate, the trip to Denver and what the crew plans to do during the NBA playoffs. You see the documentary and find out more about the cause at the Sonicsgate website.
