Stay connected for news and updates

The Seattle Mariners were able to successfully avoid the sweep on Sunday against the Los Angeles Angels at Safeco Field. The Mariners were able to return the favor and defeat the Angels ace pitcher by a final score of 2-1.

Jesus Montero broke through for the Mariners with a solo home run in the fourth inning. The blast improved Montero's all-time record against Jered Weaver to 4-for-8, with all four hits being home runs. Carlos Peguero added a solo home run in the fifth inning, also off of Weaver, which would end up being the difference in the game.

The Angels finally got on the board in the top of the ninth inning, as Howie Kendrick drove in Vernon Wells with a two-out single off of Tom Wilhelmsen. The Mariners closer was able to hang in there and pick up the third out for the save.

Hisashi Iwakuma outdueled the Angels once again, turning in 7.1 scoreless innings of five-hit baseball, walking none and striking out seven.
