The M's scored both of their runs in the top of the first inning (as they tend to do) on a two-out, two-run RBI single by Michael Saunders.
Seattle starter Jason Vargas held the Rays scoreless until the seventh inning, when he gave up back-to-back singles that allowed Desmond Jennings to score on a throwing error. Vargas was charged with no earned runs in six innings, on seven hits and three walks.
The Mariners bullpen was perfect the rest of the way, not allowing any more Rays to reach base the rest of the way. Tom Wilhelmsen picked up his ninth save of the year.
The Mariners will have a chance to win their second straight series in the rubber game on Sunday.
