Franklin Gutierrez Injury: Mariners OF Lands On 7-Day Concussion DL

Stay connected for news and updates

During Thursday night's opener against the Boston Red Sox, Seattle Mariners outfielder Franklin Gutierrez was struck in the side of the head by an errant pickoff throw. Now Gutierrez will continue his unlucky season with another trip to the disabled list.

Jeff Sullivan of Baseball Nation and Lookout Landing provided a GIF of the injury. As you can see, the toss from Sox pitcher Franklin Morales was just a bit too wide and first baseman Adrian Gonzalez was unable to get a glove on it and prevent it from striking Gutierrez, who immediately fell to the ground and was then removed from the game.

The official Mariners Twitter feed announced on Friday that Gutierrez would be placed on the new 7-day concussion disabled list. Right-handed pitcher Steve Delabar will be recalled from Triple-A to take Gutierrez's spot on the roster. Michael Saunders is expected to take over in center field while Gutierrez recovers.
