On Thursday, the Seattle Mariners went for a three-game sweep of the hometown Detroit Tigers, in a series where the bats in the Seattle lineup suddenly and shockingly came to life. The M's proved their resilience in the finale, as they survived the Tigers tying the game and ended up with a 5-4 victory and the sweep.
Once again, the M's jumped on top right away, plating three runs in the top of the first inning on Justin Smoak's third home run of the season. In the top of the fourth, Seattle stretched their lead to 4-0 on a Miguel Olivo solo shot, his first of the year.
The Tigers battled back to tie things, however, picking up a Ryan Raburn RBI single in the bottom of the fifth and three runs in the bottom of the sixth, on an RBI hit by Brennan Boesch and Miguel Cabrera's sixth homer of the year, a two-run shot off of Hector Noesi.
The Mariners reclaimed the lead in the top of the seventh when Brendan Ryan drew a two-out walk and Chone Figgins doubled to drive him in.
Noesi went five innings, giving up four runs on five hits and a walk. The bullpen was great after that, giving up just three hits and a walk the rest of the way. Brandon League gave up two of those three hits in his save attempt in the bottom of the ninth, but was able to get a game-ending double play.
