The Seattle Mariners' home opener ended with a thud on Friday night as the Cleveland Indians dished out a whipping. But Friday was about more than a game and the pregame festivities left fans with tears welling up in their eyes as Dave Niehaus was remembered in many ways. Dave Niehaus Way was unveiled, Marilyn Niehaus threw out the first pitch, Macklemore performed and there were all kinds of memories shared.
As bad as the game was, seeing Marilyn Niehaus beam from ear-to-ear as she delivered the first pitch to Felix Hernandez was a priceless moment that overshadowed the game itself. It was a joy to see Mrs. Niehaus so happy and to see Felix trot out to give her a big hug after she reached back and tossed out the official first pitch at Safeco this season.
Watch for yourself, thanks to The Seattle Times.
Mrs. Niehaus handled herself with style and grace throughout this whole process, and I can't imagine how difficult it must be for her. But with the city, and the Mariners organization, rallying around here, I hope she's been able to feel some comfort from the outpouring of support.
