Is it fair to call a player out for screwing up?

Your first round pick is typically a special player. In the era of Pete and John, the names Okung, Earl, Carpenter, and Irvin live in a different pantheon of Seahawks over the last three seasons. They aren't all necessary the most important players on the team, but they do represent a foundation for what this front office has been trying to build. It's an honor to be a first round pick, it sets you apart from other players -- if only for a day.

Bruce Irvin wasn't necessarily the name we expected, or perhaps even wanted, to hear called out for Seattle during the first round of the 2012 draft. Likely this was unfair, and based mostly off of pre-draft speculation on the "value" of Bruce, but there wasn't immediate excitement surrounding the pick. As the days and weeks went on however, it seemed apparent that he could be a very special pass-rusher. Raw, talented, explosive, "the best pure pass rusher in the draft"; if only these were the things we had heard before the draft. We would have been doing cartwheels.

Well, you would have been doing cartwheels. I'm 6'6 and 260 pounds (give or take, though you're most likely not "taking" weight away) so I might get a somersault out. But I would've been a lot more stoked for Irvin at the time he was drafted, and eventually we were all excited to see what Bruce could do.

We found out that he could do some very good things, albeit a little inconsistently on a part-time basis.

Irvin played in roughly 43% of the defensive snaps during the season. His 496 snaps were 315 fewer than Chris Clemons, but he did manage 8.0 sacks during the regular season and added one against the Redskins. On the downside, he was also held without a sack in 11 of 18 games. Though it's not entirely fair to compare the two, I will anyway. By comparison, Aldon Smith had 14 sacks as a rookie and was held without a sack just seven times in 18 games.

He could have conceivably had a more encouraging season, but given the track record of highly-talented defensive end prospects (key being "prospect" there) it was really nice to see that Irvin can get it. He certainly doesn't suck. Which is why it does suck to see him suspended for the first four games of next season for violating the drug policy.

People were upset to hear the news that yet another player violated the rules and got caught. That's the key right there, that you got caught. Frankly, how can I get mad about shit I don't know about? I didn't know about this incident yesterday and Bruce and I were cool. We were going to grab some Jimmy John's after the rec dodgeball game. Now I know about it. I mean, we're still cool, but indeed I am frustrated. Do I have a right to be?

Of course Irvin feels bad about what happened. Of course he's been depressed about it for however long he's known that he got caught and he kept going over in his head what it would be like in the press and on Twitter and Facebook for fans to express their feelings on the matter. If I had a choice about the news, it would have been "Bruce Irvin reveals rare disorder that allows him to be better at life than you, also he's donating all his money to the charity known as "Kenneth's Wallet"" but that's not what the news was. It was "Bruce Irvin cheated a little bit, got suspended for four games."

And he knows it. And he's pissed about it. And he wishes this had never happened.

So do we.

Irvin took back to Twitter to reveal to the "haters" that he knows he screwed up and his "true fans" got his back. While it's good to hear that Irvin has a positive mindset on his return from suspension and how he will rise back from the ashes like the Phoenix that he is, I also can't help but wonder if I'm not a "real fan" because I acknowledge that he screwed up and I'm pissed that he went against the rules and got caught. If we're allowed to support a player when he's doing good, what are we allowed to do when he's messing up?

Many Seahawks fans have been chugging along for decades without reward and we are embarking on probably our most anticipated season in franchise history. We already know we likely won't have Clemons to start the year. We're well aware that other injuries are bound to pop up between now and Week 1. We can't have vital players dropping out already based on something like breaking the rules, and holding them accountable as fans is something I think we are allowed to do.

And yes, I think I am a true fan of Bruce Irvin.

I am a true fan of Brandon Browner.

I am a true fan of Richard Sherman, guilty or not guilty.

I was a true fan of LeRoy Hill, and I enjoyed the hell out of my Hill marijuana jokes. Because that's what we're allowed to do as fans: Joke around, get mad, get happy, voice opinions, hold players accountable, and cheer at the loudest damn stadium in American professional sports.

There are a lot of bad things that I don't do simply based off of the fact that I don't want to be called out by my friends and family for it. Others holding you accountable is a great motivator for doing the right thing. Irvin knew that his actions could harm his team and let down his teammates at the time he broke the rules but he still did it anyway. Being sorry about it won't change the fact that he did it once.

Hearing the loudest fans in the NFL call him out on it? That might do the trick.

Surprising At-Bats: I didn't realize these guys were playing so much in the NL East

It can get kind of hard to track all of baseball unless you've invested most of your waking life into it. There are 30 teams, each playing 162 games, each with 25 players on the roster at any given time, and then likely could run through at least twice as many names that have played for the team by the end of the year. Here's a number that's about as useful as pitcher wins:

30 teams x 50 players x 162 games = 243,000 fruginandies.

That's a lot of fruginandies!

(And then also pay mind to the fact that the AL and NL are almost like two completely different leagues (wait, they technically are absolutely that) so it's even harder to pay attention to the NL if you're an AL fan and vice versa. So you might even have to double your fruginandies.)

Because of this number 243,000 and because I also have to pay attention to football, and my several jobs, and I guess having a life (jk lol) I can't pay attention to all MLB players. Except for moments like this when I'm explicitly making myself. Every so often I will go to baseball-reference (or fangraphs if I'm feeling saucy) and just click on every MLB team until I've fully updated myself. Sometimes I am ridiculously surprised at what I find out, though for fans of those teams it would be common knowledge. If you're a fan of an NL East team, these names might not surprise you and then you'll be like "aww why did I come here? :("

You came here for the information but you'll stay for the Zack Morris jokes, bitch. Plus, isn't it kind of interesting that I find it so interesting that these guys have played as much as they have? ISN'T IT?

Here are some guys that I had no idea were playing so much:

John Mayberry, OF, Phillies - 95 at-bats??

The only reason I keep an eye on Mayberry at all is because I'm a Mariners fan and the M's wasted a first round pick on Mayberry out of high school back in 2002. (I mean "waste" is a strong word, but he didn't sign.) Okay, so Phillies fans aren't surprised by Mayberry's playing time obviously, because he's played a lot since 2010. He just hasn't been very.... Good.

After a solid rookie season that saw Mayberry put up 2.3 fWAR in only 296 plate appearances, it seemed like Philadelphia could move on from the outfield that made them perennial World Series contenders from 2007-2011 and be just fine with Mayberry and Domonic Brown. Not so much.

He hit .245/.301/.395 last year and is so far hitting .253/.317/.421 in his 95 at-bats this year. Does he make up for it with outfield defense? Not really, and he's been worth a whopping 0.1 WAR since the start of last season. He Mayberry well be out of chances. (Wow, that's a good pun.)

Ben Revere, OF, Phillies - 118 at-bats??

I remember the debates at MinorLeagueBall about Revere as a prospect and how good he would really become based on his skillset. Some thought he'd be a very good outfielder and others didn't think he could make it in the major leagues. Last year he put up 3.1 fWAR with the Twins in 553 plate appearances and this year he's putting up -0.1 fWAR with the Phillies, albeit in a small sample size. I just think that the right answer among the minor league prospect debators is somewhere in between.

He has played stellar defense over the last two years and stolen 74 bases. That should keep him in lineups for awhile but his .237/.286/.263 batting line this year is "not so good" and honestly for a .274/.316/.316 career hitter, it might not get much better.

Erik Kratz, C, Phillies - 77 at-bats??

So you're tellin' me there's a Kratz?

Apparently Carlos Ruiz has been hurt? This is how much I'm able to follow National League baseball on a day-to-day basis. Erik Kratz is 33 and has played in 85 career games, including 24 this season. He's hitting a cool .195/.241/.299. Wait, that's not "cool" at all. I'm a big fat phony.

B.J. Upton, OF, Braves - 131 at-bats??

Okay fine, you figure that Upton would be an everyday regular. But there is someone in the majors that has stepped to the plate 150 times and is hitting .145/.242/.244 and is getting paid $12.45 million for it this year. Right now Upton is hitting like Chone Figgins, except that Figgins was 33 when he really collapsed (Upton is 28) and Figgins got $35 million from the Mariners (Upton's contract is $75.25 million).

Was it scary for the Braves to sign a player that was a career .255 hitter and consistently hit under .250 for the last five years? Not really, because he was still a rather consistent .240 hitter that stole 30-40 bases, hit 20ish home runs, and played decent defense. Then you do see what happens when the wheels fall off of a .240 hitter. His ISO is down from .208 last year to .099 this year, his stolen bases are down to 3 (and 3 caught stealing) when he's not on base very often and his runs and RBI are useless. He could be on the way to an uptick, but striking out 32.7% of the time after 150 plate appearances is a rather bad sign too.

Collin Cowgill, OF, Mets - 51 at-bats??

Nope. No idea. Well, I kind of remember this guy on the Diamondbacks. He's hitting .157/.173/.294 for the Mets. But I'm still not as confused as his inclusion into the lineup this many times as I am by...

Mike Baxter, OF, Mets - 65 at-bats??

You ate an entire block of cheese? I'm not even mad. I'm impressed.

The Marlins - 1,361 at-bats?!?!??!

The highest OPS+ for a Marlins regular is Marcell Ozuna (OPS+ of 122, .298/.333/.474) and he's only a regular, I think, because Giancarlo Stanton is hurt. And even Stanton's OPS+ is only 102, while no other regular is at the league-average of 100.

Rob Brantly is the regular catcher. Greg Dobbs is the regular first baseman. Donovan Solano is the regular second baseman. Adeiny Hechavarria is the regular shortstop. Placido Polanco and Juan Pierre are still regulars in the majors! Miguel Olivo has 59 at-bats and is hitting .186. This entire article could have just been Marlins, so instead of just naming one:

Marlins! "It's a who? Who? Who?" list of surprising at-bats.

Anthony Hargrove signs with Cowboys, according to report

Many people have speculated that the career of defensive end Anthony Hargrove was over following his eight-game suspension for participating in the New Orleans Saints bounty scandal. After signing with the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday however, he's clearly got some time left in the NFL.

More: Blogging the Boys for more Cowboys news

Hargrove spent just two seasons in New Orleans, but perhaps played his best football in 2009 when the Saints won the Super Bowl for the first time in franchise history. After playing in all 16 games as a defensive tackle that year and scoring a touchdown on a fumble recovery, Hargrove returned for another season in 2010 but had less success and was let go following the 2010 season. Hargrove signed with the Seattle Seahawks, playing in 15 games as a reserve. He moved on to Green Bay in the following offseason, but was released by the Packers in the 2012 preseason.

It was announced during the summer that Hargrove, along with teammates Jonathan Vilma, Scott Fujita, and Will Smith, would be facing suspensions in taking part of a bounty program that reward players for hurting opposing players. Hargrove's eight-game suspension was overturned by an internal appeals panel, but the league later re-issued the suspensions to all of the players and personnel anyway.

The Cowboys are looking to upgrade a defense that finished 19th in yards allowed, 24th in points allowed and 22nd against the run in 2012 en route to an 8-8 record. Dallas defensive lineman Josh Brent is possibly facing his own suspension for a DUI and could provide an opening for Hargrove to try and make the final 53-man roster.

More from SB Nation:

Randy Moss rumors: Wide receiver unsure if he wants to play in 2013, according to report

Few players in the NFL are as vocal as Randy Moss, so it should be a telltale sign that he might be ready to retire after a long run of silence from the veteran receiver. Moss is unsure if he wants play in the 2013 season, coming off of a Super Bowl appearance with the San Francisco 49ers, according to CBS Sports' Mike Freeman.

More: NFL News roundup: McClain retires

Moss had previously retired in August 2011 after a disappointing year in which he was released by both the Patriots and Vikings before finishing the year with the Titans and totaling just 393 yards. But after sitting out the 2011 season he decided to return and sign with the 49ers at the age of 35, playing in all 16 regular season games and the playoffs, including 41 yards in the Super Bowl loss to the Ravens.

The 49ers opted not to bring back Moss, and so far no other team has picked up the free agent receiver.

Moss is a six-time Pro Bowler, four-time All-Pro, and is second all-time in receiving touchdowns and third all-time in receiving yards.

Andrew Luck to lead quicker offense, Chuck Pagano says

Few onlookers weren't impressed with Andrew Luck's rookie season, despite riding high expectations following a remarkable career at Stanford and being the No. 1 overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. But expectations could be even higher and everybody will be watching to see if a "sophomore slump" is on the horizon for the young phenom. Head coach Chuck Pagano has no fear about a slump however, and not only endorses Luck as a "tireless worker" but says that the offense will look a little different under offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton.

Stampede Blue: Was Hamilton really talking about a read-option for the Colts?

After the Arizona Cardinals hired away former offensive coordinator and interim head coach Bruce Arians to run their team, the Colts found a familiar face to Luck to run their offense; Hamilton is the former offensive coordinator at Stanford. Pagano told reporters a little bit about how the offense will change in the transition from Arians to Hamilton, a first-time coordinator in the NFL (via the Indy Star's Mike Chappell):

The biggest difference might be a little bit more quick-game, if you will. Get the ball out of Andrew’s hands. Three- and quick five-step drops. Get it into our playmakers’ hands. A little bit more catch-and-run type of things.

Pagano also stresses that the team wants to "be able to run the football" but that they will still take shots downfield. The Colts passed the ball 628 times last season against 440 rushing attempts, 62 of which came from Luck. The rookie quarterback completed 54.1 percent of his passes for 4,374 yards, 23 touchdowns, 18 interceptions, 7.0 yards per attempt, and was named to the AFC roster for the Pro Bowl while leading the Colts from the worst record in the league to a wild card berth with an 11-5 record.

Luck also broke the single-game and full-season records for passing yards by a rookie.

The biggest changes on offense in terms of weapons for Luck will be the addition of Darrius Heyward-Bey from the Raiders following the departure of Donnie Avery, a player that had 60 catches for 781 yards last season for the Colts. Otherwise, the maturation of other young players such as T.Y. Hilton, Dwayne Allen, Coby Fleener, and LaVon Brazill, as well as veteran Reggie Wayne entering his 13th season with Indianapolis, could be the benefactors of a faster offense centered around more passes underneath and on quick-drops from the second-year quarterback.

The Colts finished 10th in total offense in 2012, but just 18th in scoring and 22nd in rushing yards. Hamilton was promoted by Stanford head coach David Shaw in 2011 to be the offensive coordinator and helped lead the Cardinal to a 16-2 record in the Pac-12 over the last two seasons, including a 2013 Rose Bowl victory, despite not having Andrew Luck.

Now, he gets to go back to coaching Luck, and hopefully for the Colts, not skipping a beat in getting off to a fast start.

Kyle Love had option to retire from Patriots, agent says

Kyle Love, only 26, could be retired right now. Instead, he has decided to keep looking for a new NFL team for the 2013 season after the Patriots released him for a medical condition. He will not pursue legal action against the franchise for what could be a potential violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act, according to his agent, Richard Kopelman, via Pro Football Talk. New England reportedly gave Love the option to retire for a year after his medical diagnosis of Type-2 diabetes or be released and look for a new home.

Love chose to be released because he just wants to play football, and Kopelman has expressed that at this time he won't pursue a lawsuit against the team.

Pats Pulpit: Patriots sign rookie Logan Ryan

An undrafted free agent in 2010 out of Mississippi State, Love overcame the odds not only made the roster of one of the best teams in the NFL, but has started 25 regular season games over the last two years, including the Patriots' loss to the Giants in Super Bowl XLVI. Love teamed with Vince Wilfork in the middle of the defensive line and the team finished ninth against the run last season in terms of rushing yards allowed.

But when he was diagnosed with Type-2 diabetes, the team released him on May 15. While that could be considered a clear violation of the law, Love has decided to not ruffle feathers and pursue his NFL career instead of a lawsuit. That doesn't mean that someone else won't, whether it's the league office or an outside party upset with the blatant violation, but for Love, he has appeared to move on.

Mike Glennon will receive extensive playing time during Buccaneers' preseason

Josh Freeman wasn't supposed to be a concern for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The fifth-year quarterback threw a career-high 27 touchdown passes in 2012, but he completed just 54.8 percent of his passes, had 17 interceptions and managed just 7.3 yards per attempt as the Bucs fell apart late in the season for the second year in a row. For that reason, 2013 third-round pick Mike Glennon might get a shot at starting sooner than anticipated.

Bucs Nation: Revis to miss OTAs

Tampa Bay coaches have been impressed with Glennon during rookie minicamp, and Mark Cook of the Pewter Report says the Buccaneers had him as the top-rated quarterback on their draft board this year. Taken with the 11th pick of the third round out of N.C. State, the 6'7 Glennon did not face a very stiff competition in terms of the 2013 quarterback class. No quarterback was taken in the top ten, only E.J. Manuel was a QB taken in the first round, and Glennon ended up being the third quarterback selected in the draft at the 73rd overall pick.

Bucs Nation: Fans react to Glennon

Still, despite the class being seen as "weak" by many experts, it doesn't preclude any of them from getting a chance to start, just as 2012 third-round picks Russell Wilson and Nick Foles did last year for the Seahawks and Eagles, respectively. General manager Mark Dominik recently said that Glennon will get "a lot of reps in the preseason" and have a chance to prove his mettle.

That doesn't mean that Glennon will have as much success as a player like Wilson did, but if Freeman continues to struggle to perform at a high-level consistently, the Bucs may have less patience with him now that they have an interesting rookie backup and have spent a considerable amount of money to build a team that can win right now. If Freeman falters, there is now an interesting option waiting in the wings.

Cowboys explore moving out of Valley Ranch practice facility, according to report

The Dallas Cowboys are such an integral force in the NFL that even calling your city home to their practices can be quite an honor. That's an honor that Valley Ranch could be in danger of losing amid reports that after 28 years the Cowboys are looking for a new place to call home for their practices, according to the Dallas Morning News' David Moore.

Despite the fact that Dallas is one of the best draws in the league, Valley Ranch has been referred to as "outdated" and behind the curve of some other practice facilities in the NFL, so it appears that they could look to build a new facility somewhere else.

Blogging the Boys: Breaking down the Cowboys' struggles on offense

The Cowboys will continue to practice at Valley Ranch for the 2013 season, but Moore's sources say that they could be in discussions with Frisco, Arlington, or keeping the team in Irving, where Valley Ranch is located.

Valley Ranch is approximately 110,000 square feet on 30 acres, but reportedly around three-quarters of the NFL has built a new practice facility since it was officially opened in August 1985. It still lacks certain amenities, such as a full-service dining hall, and for Jerry Jones and the Cowboys it would seem that they would like to have all the luxuries of any other professional sports team.

It appears that as of right now, they're starting to look for a place to break ground on the next one, even if it remains in Valley Ranch.
