London Olympics 2012 Medal Count: Great Britain Picks Up The Pace

Stay connected for news and updates

The second weekend of the 2012 Olympic Games in London have begun and all eyes are fixed on the medal count. The United States are right where they want to be; alone in the top spot.

As track and field events heat up, the U.S. is trying to gain some distance between China, who is hot on their heels. Host country Great Britain, while still a distant third place in total medals, is hoping to make a big push in their third-place gold medal tally. They picked up three big gold medals in front of a roaring crowd on Saturday in track and field and hope to add plenty more.

Here are the total medal leaders at the end of Saturday's events:

1. United States - 54 (26, 13, 15)
2. China - 53 (25, 16, 12)
3. Great Britain - 29 (14, 7, 8)
4. Russia - 28 (3, 15, 10)
5. Japan - 24 (2, 10, 12)
