Wimbledon 2012: Roger Federer Tops Andy Murray To Claim 17th Career Grand Slam Title

Andy Murray looked to become the first English man to win the championships Wimbledon since 1936, while Roger Federer was eyeing his incredible 7th Wimbledon title as the two men squared off in the final on Sunday.

But with some wet weather and the roof closed on Centre Court the tennis gods smiled down on Federer as he bested Murray in four sets for a 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 victory.

The victory marks the 17th career grand slam title for the 30-year-old Federer, tying the mark set by Pete Sampras and William Renshaw at the All England Club.

"It's amazing," Federer said in the postmatch ceremony. "It equals me to Pete Sampras, who's my hero. It's just amazing."

Federer is now 17-7 in Grand Slam finals, while imporving his mark at Wimbledon to 7-1. Murray dropped to 0-4 in major finals, with three of those coming against Federer.

"Everybody always talks about the pressure of Wimbledon, how tough it is," said an emotional Murray, who, microphone in hand, needed nearly a minute to compose himself before speaking. "But it's not for the people watching. The support's been incredible. So thank you."

Many of England's finest were on hand to possibly see Murray make history, such as Prince William's wife, Kate, David Beckham, British Prime Minister David Cameron and a number of former Wimbledon champions sat in the sat Royal Box.

Wimbledon 2012 Scores And Results: Roger Federer, Andy Murray Advance To Finals

With only four men left at the All England Club, Friday's semifinal matches were chocked full of big time names as Roger Feder took on Novak Djokovic while Andy Murray faces off with Jo-Wilfred Tsonga for the chance to play in the finals.

Roger Federer had been struggling against Djokovic as of late, but battled hard to earn his eighth trip to the finals with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory. Centre court had it's retractable roof closed for the match, but didn't seem to affect either player much. Federer was simply the better player in this match.

The win improved Federer's semifinal record to 8-0 at Wimbledon. His only loss in the final came in 2008 to Rafael Nadal.

Englishman Andy Murray had his hands full as well, but eventually managed to put down Jo-Wilfried Tsonga with a 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 win. He is looking to become the first Brit to win the event since way back when in 1936.

Wimbledon 2012 Scores And Results: Novak Djokovic Will Meet Roger Federer In Semifinals

Wednesday was Day 9 of the 2012 Wimbledon Tennis Championships, and Gentlemen's singles action saw the semifinals take shape. Andy Murray beat David Ferrer to advance, Roger Federer beat Mikhail Youzhny to move on, and Novak Djokovic got the win against Florian Mayer. Djokovic will meet Federer in a semifinal match that could easily be a classic, while Murray will take on Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. The Gentlemen's semifinals take place on Friday.

There was no Ladies' singles action on Wednesday, but Serena Williams was in action in the Ladies' doubles draw. She and sister Venus beat Maria Kirilenko and Nadia Petrova to advance to the Ladies' doubles quarterfinals. Serena has a singles semifinal match on Thursday against Victoria Azarenka. Azarenka had the luxury of the day off on Wednesday, perhaps lending her an advantage against Williams.

2012 Wimbledon Results: Maria Sharapova Cruises In Third Round

We've had a great first week at Wimbledon and Friday saw quite a few terrific matches be played. On the men's side of things it was Roger Federer who rallied in the final three sets to defeat Julien Benneteau after a very early scare. Novak Djokovic lost his first set against Radek Stepanek, but then came back to win the next three sets, 6-2, 6-2, 6-2.

The favorite for Americans left at Wimbledon has to be Sam Querrey, who pulled the upset on Friday over No. 21 Milos Raonic in four sets.

On the ladies side of the tournament, Maria Sharapova advanced yet again in just two sets. She won 6-1, 6-4. Agnieszka Radwanska, the world's current No. 3 player, won her match in two sets, as well.

2012 Wimbledon Results: Serena Williams Advances To Second Round

Serena Williams made sure that at least one of the Williams' sisters would stay alive for a Wimbledon title after defeating Barbora Zahlavova-Strycova, 6-2, 6-4 on Tuesday to advance to the second round.

Serena's sister, Venus, was knocked out of the first round of the tournament on Monday. Serena was knocked out of this year's French Open in the first round as well so this makes two straight Grand Slams where one of the sisters didn't get out of the first round.

Serena's loss in the French Open was the first time she lost in the first round of a Grand Slam Tournament. Her record is now 47-1 in that position.

Williams is looking for her first Grand Slam title since the 2010 Wimbledon and her first Grand Slam final since losing to Samantha Stosur in the 2011 U.S. Open.

Williams is currently ranked no. 6 in the world.

2012 Wimbledon Results: Venus Williams Ousted In First Round

After watching her sister Serena get knocked out of the French Open in the first round, Venus Williams is the latest Williams' sister to earn an early exit from a Grand Slam after the five-time champion lost in shocking fashion to Russian Elena Vesnina, 6-1, 6-3 on Monday, according to the Associated Press.

This is the first time since 1997 that Williams has lost in the opening round of Wimbledon.

"I come into tournaments with a positive attitude," Williams said. "I don't really feel like talking about my health now. It is what it is. I'm just a couple of months into getting back on tour. Life is challenging but I'm always up for a challenge."

Williams is still making her way back from a long layoff due to being diagnosed with an autoimmune disease in 2011. The French Open was her first Grand Slam since August 29, 2011.
