2012 College World Series: Oregon Eliminated In 3-2 Loss To Kent State

The Oregon Ducks lost by a score of 3-2 to Kent State Monday night, dropping 2 of 3 in the Eugene Super Regional. The loss ends their run before they could reach the 2012 College World Series.

Kent State struck first, scoring a run each in the first and second. Oregon was taking no chances, pulling starting pitcher Jeff Gold after just 1.2 innings. The bullpen kept things under control long enough for the Ducks offense to tie the game at two courtesy of a two RBI single from Ryon Healy in the eighth inning. Jimmie Sherfy couldn't keep things under control, though, as the Flashes came back in the bottom of the ninth. Derek Toadvine reached on a walk, advanced on a groundout, and came home on an RBI double by shortstop Jimmy Rider.

The Ducks were able to force the Game 3, but Kent State came back from the Game 2 upset and ended the Ducks' run in the 2012 NCAA Division I Playoffs. A full box score is available here. Kent State advances to the College World Series and will play Baylor or Arkansas, depending on who wins the Waco Super Regional.

2012 College World Series Scores: Oregon State Stays Alive With Victory Over LA-Monroe

The Oregon St. Beavers cannot lose again at the Baton Rouge regional if they hope to keep their College World Series hopes alive. The club avoided elimination on Sunday afternoon, defeating Louisiana-Monroe by a score of 11-2. They will now rest momentarily before taking on the LSU Tigers on Sunday night.

Oregon State scored four runs in the second inning, three in the fourth, two in the fifth and two more in the seventh. The Louisiana-Monoe pitching staff was forced to work in and out of damage all game.

Left fielder Michael Conforto went 3-for-4 with four RBIs for the Beavers. Shortstop Tyler Smith also had a big day with two hits, three RBI and a run scored.

The story of the day for OSU was starting pitcher Ben Wetzler, who worked 8.2 impressive innings. He allowed just two runs to score, neither of which were earned. Wetzler surrendered eight hits and three walks, striking out three in the process. He threw 128 pitches.

The Beavers will now face LSU at 4:30 p.m. PST. They need to win in order to stay alive, and that would force a do-or-die final game on Monday against the Tigers.

The state of Oregon is representing itself incredibly well at the 2012 College World Series as the ORegon Ducks and Oregon State Beavers have continued to fight their way through their respective regionals, keeping their College World Series hopes alive with some important matchups this Sunday.

After taking care of Austin Peay and Fullerton in their first two games of the Eugene Regional, the Ducks find themselves waiting for their opponent in the final as the two teams they have already beaten (Austin Peay and Fullerton) will battle it out to face Oregon in the final this evening at 4 p.m. PT.

As for the Beavers, they lost LSU in their last game so are in the loser's bracket against Louisiana-Monroe. If Oregon State can advance they will take on LSU once more, and if can win there will force a decisive game seven to be played on Monday night.

College World Series 2012: Oregon Ducks Defeat Austin Peay In Controversial 9th Inning

The Oregon Ducks rallied in the ninth inning against Austin Peay in their opening game of the 2012 College World Series, but it did not come without controversy. The Ducks trailed late on Friday night, but a missed call on a tag from the Peay pitcher tied the game. UO then finished off the rally to claim a 6-5 victory.

The Ducks tied the score in the ninth when Brett Thomas hit a single back to pitcher Tyler Rogers. Tyler Rogers, the closer for Austin Peay, attempted to tag Oregon's J.J. Altobelli as he made his way to the plate, but the umpire ruled his tag missed the runner. A photo would show the tag was indeed made, but the umpires did not overrule the call.

Aaron Payne came in to score the game-winning run when Austin Peay third baseman Greg Bachman couldn't handle a ball hit at him by Kyle Garlick.

A win is a win, and now the Ducks will prepare to face Cal-State Fullerton on Saturday afternoon. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. from Eugene.

College World Series Scores: Oregon State Defeats Belmont In Baton Rouge Regional

The No. 2 seed Oregon St. Beavers knocked off the Belmont Bruins in their opening game of the 2012 College World Series. Despite reeling off only three hits on the afternoon the Beavers executed nicely in the middle innings against Belmont starter Chase Brookshire, scratching out a 2-1 victory.

Ryan Barnes was the hero on Friday. He led off the second inning with a double and was moved over to third base on a sacrifice bunt. Barnes then came in to score on a sacrifice fly from Kavin Keyes, giving OSU an early 1-0 lead.

Belmont tied the game up in the fifth inning. Dylan Craig led off the inning with a triple down the right field line and scored on a groundout from Zac Mitchell.

The Beavers took the lead in the sixth. Joey Matthews doubled and moved into third on a groundout. Following an intentional walk, Barnes came to the plate and laid down a perfect squeeze bunt that scored Matthews from third, giving Oregon State a 2-1 lead they would not relinquish.

Jace Fry made the start for OSU and worked five innings, allowing just one run to score on four hits and three walks. Tony Bryant and Matt Boyd combined to work the final four innings, allowing just two hits and not issuing a single walk. Boyd struck out four in his 2.1 innings of work.

The Beavers will face the winner of LSU vs. Louisiana-Monroe on Saturday at 8 p.m. ET.
