2012 KentuckyDerby Results: I'll Have Another Wins, Bodemeister and Dullahan Show And Place

The 2012 Kentucky Derby concluded in Louisville on Saturday evening, with 14-1 contender I'll Have Another surprising viewers with an inspiring performance. Bodemeister held the lead for much of the race, posting strong splits and outrunning Trinniberg, a horse with much stronger sprinting speed. But it wasn't enough to hold of I'll Have Another, who closed what was at one point a five length lead and overtook Bodemeister in the final yards.

9/2 favorite Union Rags had a disappointing race, struggling with the traffic that resulted from the number four post position. Union Rags was still stuck in traffic coming around the final turn, and was not a threat coming down the stretch. I'll Have Another's draw of post 19 proved to be an advantage, and the horse that took the Santa Anita Derby adds the 2012 Kentucy Derby to its credentials.

Take It To The Bank: Odds For Every Horse In The 2012 Kentucky Derby

If there's one thing I know, it's horse racing. Yep, I've studied all the greats: Secretary, Rear Admiral, Seacracker, Man O' Pause, Seattle Sloth; and I know the difference between a good horse and a champion. If there's two things I know, it's horse racing and betting. Fortunately for you and your bank accounts, I'm here to combine those expertises (expertisi?) into one wealth-increasing Kentucky Derby article.

Years of focus on the minutiae of equestrian contests has led me to one, foolproof conclusion: it's all in the name. The better the name, the better chance of winning. Those animals know what you call them, and they'll perform accordingly. They're animals. It's instinctual.

With that in mind, the odds of winning (my odds, not the official odds mind you) for each horse in the race are below. Enjoy, and send me the residuals.

***

LONGSHOTS

Dullahan (50/1) -- Look, this horse is just rubbing it's inanity in our faces. Dullahan. Might as well be Lameson or O'Boring or McNothingaboutmylifeismeaningful. There's just no defensible reason for naming a horse (or anything) Dullahan. Whose attention are you trying to get with that name? What was the inspiration for it, the color taupe? Maybe it's the owner's last name; that would make it a legacy title and that would merit some consideration, but just because you have a last name and own some stuff doesn't mean you should name that stuff after yourself. Some names just aren't meant for publicity. Then again...

Hansen (50/1) -- This has gotta be another surname. This one might even be worse than Dullahan, if only because "Hansen" just blends right in where you at least stop to take notice of how banal Dullahan is. At first i was all like "Oh, 'MmmBop! I remember when that was a thing! This must be an ironic name, courtesy of some mustache-having, neckerchief-wearing, Death-Cab-listening hipster. I can get on board with that!" The I realized that the song was by HansOn, not HansEn, leaving me with no explanation other than that the horse has some unsightly facial feature or a third testicle and its owner doesn't want to bring any undue attention to it.

Went The Day Well (50/1) -- Who named this one, Yoda? "Went the day well it did, young Skywalker." Should've named this horse Syntactical Nightmare. Get it? Nightmare? Like a chick horse.

Trinniberg (50/1) -- I just spent 45 minutes trying to deduce what Trinniberg could mean. it yields literally zero non-horse search results on Google. Then it hit me: Brig intern. It's an anagram for "brig intern". Apparently the namer of this steed was once the understudy of a ship's prison guard. Or maybe this is just the worst name ever given to a living thing. Yes, the worst.

Bodemeister (50/1) -- Apparently Stiffler named this one.

UNLIKELY

Prospective (30/1) -- The word "prospective" means "likely to happen. In that sense, it would seem all but assured that this one will gallop to victory and claim the coveted Kentucky Derby Trophy.* Then again, it could be referring to anything. Maybe it means the horse is likely to finish the race. That's true. Could mean it's likely to show up at the race. even more probable. But for all we know it could just mean that it's likely that it's a horse. If the horse had a real prospective shot at winning the race, then they oughtta go with something like Presumptive Favorite. Prospective is just too vague.

*Do they give out a trophy? A medal? A gift certificate? Honest question.

Creative Cause (30/1) -- How? How is this creative? What am I missing here?

Alpha (30/1) -- The word alone carries significant cache, calling to mind many impressive terms like First, Leader, Beginnings, Cereal. It is, however, a superfluously overused term and, as you'll soon see, can't hold up to most of the monikers in the field.

Union Rags (20/1) -- Because "Confederate Robes" was taken.

Take Charge Indy (20/1) -- I like this one. It's not the type of name that wins, but it's the type of name that could place if everything breaks the right way. Take Charge Indy could mean any number of things, but the only thing I can think of when I hear it is this:

Shortround_medium

And when I see this:

Shortround_medium

All I can think is, "that's not a cookie!" I think I may love this horse.

SLEEPERS

Gemologist (15/1) -- This is a really easy spot for a diamond in the rough joke. Not gonna do it though. You guys deserve better than that. Instead I'm gonna go with a did I ever tell you about my uncle the gemologist joke. What's that? Can't say it here? Cuz of the goat cheese part?

I can't tell you that joke because of the goat cheese part.

Daddy Knows Best (15/1) -- I imagine this horse is unbearable in the stables. Always sitting in his recliner, complaining about today's music, grounding the children. But he loves them. In his own way, he loves those kids.

Optimizer (15/1) -- Optimizer became a race horse after a short-lived stint on this show. Racing was just supposed to be an off-season training program for The Eliminator, like when Herschel Walker joined the Olympic Bobsled team, but it turned out to be his calling.

POTENTIAL PLACERS

Liaison (12/1) -- Everyone needs a guy who can get them things. Anyone who's ever watched "The Shawshank Redemption" 57 times on TBS knows that. Liaisons are more common than you'd think; your computer is liason for information, the guy at Costco is a liaison to those tiny sausages*, hell, your mom was a liaison for the burp that your tiny baby throat wasn't strong enough to force out. Liaisons are great cuz they got the hook-up. For parties.

*Actually just one tiny sausage. It's a sample, not a buffet table.

Daddy Long Legs (12/1) -- Great spider name, great zoot-suit dancing name, great racing name. Watch out for this one.

Done Talking (10/1) -- What! +drops mic+

CONTENDERS

El Padrino (8/1) -- At first blush, this horse's name put it squarely in the "Unlikely" category, but then I typed it in to Google Translate remembered all the Spanish I know and realized that it means The Godfather. Imagine being a horse trying to race against a horse that leaves horse heads in beds as messages to those who wrong them. Beat that guy and you could wake up to any horse's head on the pillow next to you. Even your own!

Sabercat (6/1) - If I have to tell you why Sabercat is a contender, the bridge to our friendship is a long one.

Rousing Sermon (9/2) -- My grandfather spent the better part of his life traveling the Western Hemisphere, preaching at big tent revivals and teaching your Panamanian kids how to play basketball. My grandma says that when he preached, even the spiders in the ground repented. Once, he had a heart attack in Bolivia and spent the ambulance trip to the hospital proselytizing to the medics. I never knew that version of my grandpa; the one that spent my childhood tottering around and eating breakfast with my mom in the mornings was a gentle, calm man, but dear Lord, what I wouldn't give to have heard one of those sermons.

WINNER

I'll Have Another (4/1) -- And when he does, so will I.

2012 Kentucky Derby Odds: Bodemeister Slips, Union Rags Odds-On Favorite. For Now.

Kentucky Derby odds have changed in the last few hours, following some heavy betting action in the run up to the 138th running of the Run for the Roses. Bodemeister was the favorite when the morning line was released, at 4-1 odds, but ceded the 'favorite' spot by sliding to 8-1 this afternoon. Union Rags, holding steady at 9-2 odds, now holds that distinction.

If you're looking to get your bets in, Bodemeister looks to be a nice value-bet at the moment, but if you like betting on a long shot, Prospective is your horse, holding 69-1 odds. Laison holds 60-1 odds, and Sabercat is at 38-1. In terms of the safer bets at the moment, Hansen sits at 7-1, Gemologist at 8-1, and Dullahan at 10-1. Here's the full listing of odds, as they currently sit.

Daddy Long Legs 26-1
Optimizer 31-1
Take Charge Indy 8-1
Union Rags 6-1
Dullahan 10-1
Bodemeister 8-1
Rousing Sermon 19-1
Creative Cause 12-1

Prospective 69-1
Went The Day Well 20-1
Hansen 7-1
Gemologist 8-1

Kentucky Derby 2012 Betting Guide: Planning On Making a Few Bets?

If you're like me, you're a sports fan. You might appreciate the spectacle and tradition, sit in awe of the talent and athleticism on display, and respect the hard work and determination of the participants of any in a wide range of sports. If you're like me, you will watch pretty much anything with a little drama and action. Hell, I'll even watch golf, if nothing else is on. Also, if you're like me, you're a degenerate gambler, and if you're still somehow like me, you're planning on watching the horses this Saturday and paying homage to the tradition of the American Institution known as the Kentucky Derby by making yourself a mint julep and putting a few of your hard earned greenbacks on your favorite horse or jockey.

Because you may not want to take advice from a guy like me, I would recommend you consult with SB Nation's resident Horse Whisperer, Matt Gardner. He wrote an illuminative column on how to bet on the Kentucky Derby here that you should definitely take a look at, but first things first, I'll let Matt lay out a little jargon you may need to know before calling your bookie (I mean, legally betting online).

WIN: A bet on a horse to win (if you don't know this you probably shouldn't be betting)
PLACE: A bet on a horse to finish either 1st or 2nd.
SHOW: A bet on a horse to finish 1st, 2nd or 3rd.

Those are the standard bets that everybody is familiar with. They are simple, straight forward, it's easy to calculate the cost, and they are easy to make. Where things start to become more complicated is with what are known as the exotic bets. Below are the exotic wagers offered by Churchill Downs this weekend.

EXACTA: A bet picking the 1st and 2nd place finishers in a race.
TRIFECTA: A bet picking the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers in a race.
SUPERFECTA: A bet picking the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place finishers in a race.
DAILY DOUBLE: A bet picking the winners of two races, usually two consecutive races.
PICK 3: A bet picking the winners of three consecutive races.
PICK 4: A bet picking the winners of four consecutive races.
PICK 5: A bet picking the winners of five consecutive races.
PICK 6: A bet picking the winners of six consecutive races.

Kentucky Derby 2012: Cocktails For Watching Horses Run [VIDEO]

The Kentucky Derby is a place of tradition like few others in the United States, adhering to some for quite some time now.

"My Old Kentucky Home", the song played when the horses are led onto the field, has been played at the Derby by University of Louisville Marching Band since way back when in 1936. Celebrities are also a staple attraction at the event as some horses in the Derby previously have been owned by the likes of Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, director Steven Speilberg and musician Burt Bacharach.

The Garland of Roses, presented to the winner of the Kentucky Derby each year, has been shipped to Danville, KY to be freeze-dried for preservation since 1996. Some horse owners even save a rose to dip it in silver as a remembrance piece of their victory.

Amazingly, there never has been a winner to come out of post position #15.

Now that you've made yourself smarter, how about a cocktail?

SB Nation's Matt Ufford has found the perfect recipies for some classic southern cocktails like the Mint Julep, Old Fashioned and Whiskey Smash, all staples of the Kentucky Derby. Check out the video below to see how to make them all right, with ingredients listed for you below as well.

And remember, Early Times is the official Kentucky whiskey used for Mint Juleps at the Kentucky Derby.

MINT JULEP:

1. Muddle 3-5 sprigs of mint with simple syrup or sugar (to taste)

2. Add 3 oz. bourbon and crushed ice in layers

3. Garnish with mint

WHISKEY SMASH:

1. Muddle 2-4 pieces lemon, 3-5 sprigs of mint, and simple syrup or sugar to taste

2. Add 2-3 oz. bourbon, stir, and strain (optional)

3. Garnish with mint and/or lemon

OLD FASHIONED:

1. Mix 1/2 oz. simple syrup with 2 dashes bitters OR Muddle 1 sugar cube in a splash of water and 2 dashes bitters

2. Add 2 oz. bourbon (or rye) with ice, stir

3. Garnish with twist of lemon or orange

Kentucky Derby 2012 Picks And Predictions: Take Charge Indy Worth Looking At

Take Charge Indy has flown under the radar compared to other big horses like Bodemeister or Union Rags. Bodemeister currently is the favorite with 4/1 odds, and Union Rags isn't too far behind at 9/2. But Take Charge Indy (with 15/1 odds) might be a horse worth watching in this tournament, simply because the man who's riding him might be the one with the most success at this racetrack.

The big reason Take Charge Indy might be a good pick is jockey Calvin Borel. Borel has enjoyed a lot of recent success at Churchill Downs and loves using that rail to march toward victory. Borel has won the 2007, 2009, and 2010 Derbys. If you're looking for a solid pick that doesn't rely too much on chalk or betting on longshots, here's your man.

Kentucky Derby 2012: Daddy Long Legs Seen As Strong Contender

With the Kentucky Derby only days away, it's time to brush up on the horses in this year's field. In our latest 'Better Know A horse' segment heading into the 2012 Kentucky Derby, we take a look at one of the favorites of this year's event, Daddy Long Legs, and it's changes of winning the race.

Horse: Daddy Long Legs

Trainer: Aidan O'Brien

Pedigree: By Scat Daddy out of a Meadowlake mare (Dreamy Maiden)

Career Record: 5-3-0-0

Career Earnings: $1,308,752

Notable Races: G2-UAE Derby (1st); G1-Breeders' Cup Juvenile (12th); G2-Royal Lodge Stakes (1st); G2-Champagne (GB) Stakes (4th)

SB Nation's resident horse whisperer Matt Gardner with the commentary on Daddy Long Legs' chances:

Daddy Long Legs doesn't have much of an excuse for his poor performance in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile. Unlike several of his rivals, he had a relatively clean trip around the track and simply failed to mount a challenge at any point in the race. Things won't get a whole lot easier in the Derby after Daddy Long Legs drew the dreaded rail post.

No they certainly won't. We'll just have to wait and see how Daddy Long Legs finishes.
