NCAA Tournament 2012: Gonzaga Bulldogs Eliminated; Season By The Numbers

The Gonzaga Bulldogs saw their season end on Saturday afternoon, losing a heartbreaker to the Ohio St. Buckeyes. While fans will undoubtably be disappointed with the final outcome, Mark Few and his program had a great year in 2011-12, one most figured would be more of a rebuilding season with all the young freshmen in the mix.

Here was a recap of their season by the numbers, as well as a preview for next year.

Final Record: 26-7 overall, 13-3 in conference play.

Tournament Results: (W) vs. West Virginia 77-54, (L) vs. Ohio State 73-66

Leading Scorers: Kevin Pangos (13.8), Elias Harris (13.0), Robert Sacre (11.8), Gary Bell, Jr. (10.1)

Seniors: Robert Sacre, Marquise Carter

2012-13 Outlook: The Bulldogs may struggle early in the season as they learn to play without Sacre in the paint, but this team is very young and projects very well moving forward. Pangos and Bell should headline the backcourt for years to come, while Harris will likely be a favorite for conference POY as a senior. Gonzaga does not have any freshmen committed as of now.

NCAA Tournament 2012 Scores: Gonzaga Bulldogs Fall To Ohio State Buckeyes 73-66

The Gonzaga Bulldogs gave everything they had on Saturday afternoon against a very talented Ohio St. Buckeyes team. Despite a strong performance from various players and a late rally that tied the game up with nearly four minutes left, the Bulldogs fell apart in the closing moments and ended up losing by a score of 73-66.

As fans, you should only be proud of the guys who laid it all on the line. It's one thing if a program goes out and embarrasses itself by not showing heart or effort; it's another if they go out swinging as a heavy underdog. Head coach Mark Few did a tremendous job with his players in 2011-12 and the team is set up well for the future.

Gary Bell, Jr. led his team with 18 and also dished out five assists and grabbed five rebounds. Elias Harris had 16 and seven rebounds, while freshman Kevin Pangos had a rough shooting day on his way to 10 points. Senior big man Robert Sacre played his final game as he battled foul trouble throughout, finishing with eight points and five rebounds.

The Zags shot 38.8% from the field, hit eight of their 24 3-point attempts, and went 14-for-19 from the charity stripe.

The Buckeyes just had too much talent on the floor. While only five players scored, four of them had 13 points or more. They were led by Jared Sullinger and Deshaun Thomas, who both had 18 each, while sophomore point guard Aaron Craft had a double-double with 17 and 10 assists.

Ohio State will face the winner of Florida State and Cincinnati. Those two teams will face off on Sunday evening.

For more on the Bulldogs and to reflect on their season, head over to The Slipper Still Fits.

NCAA Tournament 2012: Gonzaga Vs. Ohio State Lives Up To Billing, Buckeyes Lead At Half

The Gonzaga Bulldogs have their hands full with the Ohio St. Buckeyes, but some sharp-shooting and solid defense has the team within a few points at the half. The Bulldogs actually led most of the first half, but they fell asleep for a bit down the stretch and surrendered the lead in the closing seconds. At the break, Ohio State leads by a score of 39-37.

Elias Harris got off to a strong start in the half and has seven points at the break, but two fouls held him out for the final few minutes. Kevin Pangos has seven as well, although he struggled with his shot in the early going, making just one of his five attempts from behind the arc. Robert Sacre has five, but he, like Harris, also has two fouls. Gary Bell Jr. did a little bit of everything for the Zags, scoring three points, dishing out three assists and bringing down two rebounds.

Deshaun Thomas led all scores with 12 and scored 10 straight points for the Buckeyes at one point. Point guard Aaron Craft has 10 points and seven assists (seven in 20 minutes!), while All-American big man Jared Sullinger has eight points, two rebounds and two fouls.

The second half is about to get underway on CBS. Will the Bulldogs pull it together in the second half, or will the Buckeyes continue their run from the first half?

2012 NCAA Tournament Predictions: Gonzaga Picked To Move To Round Of 32

SB Nation is in agreement when it comes to the Gonzaga Bulldogs - they should advance to the Round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament.

Slipper Still Fits and SB Nation's Bill Connelly both have the Bulldogs winning their first round matchup against West Virginia as the 7-10 matchup in the East Region.

SSF only speaks on the first round matchup but Connelly - who posted all of his picks for the tournament - went further and has Gonzaga falling to no. 2 seed Ohio State in the second round.

SSF knows that the Zags will have their hands full with Mountaineers senior forward Kevin Jones who is averaging 20.1 points and 11.1 rebounds per game this season.

ESPN's Andy Katz lists it as his most intriguing game in the region and ESPN's Doug Gottlieb pointed out the contrasting styles make for an interesting game. The Mountaineers are more of a physical team while the Zags are finesse. But neither made a pick.

NCAA Bracket 2012: No. 7 Gonzaga Battles No. 10 West Virginia In First Round

The Gonzaga Bulldogs will open this NCAA Tournament appearance as a No. 7 seed in the East Region Thursday in Pittsburgh. The opponent for the Bulldogs will be the West Virginia Mountaineers, and the two teams will tangle on Thursday, March 15th. Here is a first look at the first foe for Gonzaga.

Team: West Virginia Mountaineers

Record: 19-13, 9-9 in conference

Conference: Big East

RPI: Tied for 56th, 4-8 against RPI Top 50

Ken Pomeroy Rank: 42nd overall.

Jeff Sagarin Computer Rating: 38th

Gonzaga is a good team that has proven it can beat good team like St. Mary's, Arizona, and Notre Dame. The Irish are a team that's handled the Mountaineers, so the Bulldogs have to feel like they have a good shot at winning this matchup. They definitely have a lot of talent. Unfortunately, they'll be playing in a semi-away environment despite having the better seed, as West Virginia only has a short drive to Pittsburgh while Gonzaga has to go cross-country.

NCAA Tournament 2011 Bracket: East Region Home To Gonzaga, West Virginia

The Gonzaga Bulldogs head East this year and will start our their tournament play in Pittsburgh, against the West Virginia Mountaineers. The Syracuse Orange grab the top spot in the region and represent a great challenge for the Zags, should they catch fire and win a few games.

The Mountaineers had an up and down season but toiled in the Big East, a very tough conference. They had the 18th ranked strength of schedule this year, in the nation, and still managed to finish 19-13, but that was only good for 8th in their conference. They're 4-6 in their last 10 games, including losses to Pitt, Louisville, UConn, and Notre Dame twice.

Gonzaga, predictably, had the 78th ranked strength of schedule on the year so it's tough to compare overall records - GU finished 2nd in the WCC for the first time in 11 years, after winning outright or sharing the title for over a decade. Regardless, the Zags have a fairly tough draw- if they're able to get by the Mountaineers, it's likely, barring a major upset, they'll face off with the No. 2 seed Ohio State Buckeyes, who finished 7th in the nation in RPI, according to CBS, and who are owners of a 27-7 record.

Check out the full Southeast region bracket below.

No. 1 Syracuse vs No. 16 UNC Asheville
No. 8 Kansas State vs No. 9 Southern Miss
No. 5 Vanderbilt vs No. 12 Harvard
No. 4 Wisconsin vs No. 13 Montana
No. 2 Ohio State vs No. 15 Loyola
No. 7 Gonzaga vs No. 10 West Virginia
No. 3 Florida State vs No. 14 St. Bonaventure
No. 6 Cincinnati vs No. 11 Texas

March Madness Bracket 2012: Gonzaga Basketball's Path To The NCAA Tournament

The Gonzaga Bulldogs have been a fixture in the NCAA tournament for the last decade. Their journey to the No. 7 seed in the East Regional 2012 was no different.

The squad is led by their talented freshman Kevin Pangos, who was an excellent passer, shooter and solid point guard overall. Elias Harris and Robert Sacre provided the rebounding presence inside, with excellent support from Gary Bell and Sam Dower.

Gonzaga had only one bad loss at USF, but otherwise lost to all the teams they were expected to lose to, dropping road games to St. Mary's and BYU while losing a hard-fought home contest against Michigan State. Gonzaga had to play only two games in the WCC tournament (getting two byes), beating BYU decisively before falling to St. Mary's in overtime in the tournament championship game.

Gonzaga ends up with the 7th seed, and will play No. 10 West Virginia.

NCAA Bracket 2012: Gonzaga To Play West Virginia In First Round

After landing the No. 7 seed in the 2012 NCAA Tournament, the Gonzaga Bulldogs will be playing 10th-seeded West Virginia Mountaineers to kick things off in the first round on Thursday. Though once thought to be a lock for the tournament early in the season, a poor month of February put West Virginia on the bubble as March approached. However, they finished the year 19-13 before losing in the second round of the Big East Conference Tournament to UConn on Wednesday, 71-67. The Mountaineers finished 9-9 in the tough Big East, finishing 18th in strength of schedule in the nation, according to CBS's RPI ratings. Overall, the Mountaineers finished 56th in RPI, with their most impressive wins this season include Kansas State, Georgetown and Cincinnati. Gonzaga finished 23rd in RPI.

West Virginia's two main stars are 6'8" senior forward Kevin Jones who averaged 20.2 ppg this year and 6'2" senior guard Darryl "Truck" Bryant, who scored 17.2 points per game. The winner of that 7-10 matchup between West Virginia and Gonzaga will face the winner of 2 seed Ohio State and 15 seed Loyola Maryland.
