NCAA Basketball Schedule: Game Time & TV Info For Saturday

The Gonzaga Bulldogs must be counting their lucky stars that they are still in the hunt for the national championship after Friday night. WCC champs the St. Mary's, Calif. The stage has now been set for a tournament where absolutely anything can happen. Saturday kicks off the Round of 32 and it is entirely possible that No. 1 Syracuse will be sent packing. Hope you filled out your brackets in pencil, because sheesh.

Fab Melo Ineligible for NCAA Tournament; Syracuse Dealt a Big Hit

Syracuse sophomore center Fab Melo will not play in the upcoming 2012 NCAA Tournament due to eligibility issues, per the university's website. "Given University policy and federal student privacy laws, no further details can be provided at this time," the site said. The 2nd-ranked and No. 1 seed Orange (31-2) were 29-1 with Melo on the court, and The 7-foot center has averaged 7.8 points, 5.8 rebounds and 2.9 blocks on the year. He also had 88 blocks.

As you can see, it's a big hit for the Orange, whose rebounding is 129th in the league as it is, and will now likely struggle even further. Make sure you take this into account and adjust your brackets if need be. The Dance just got a little more interesting...

NCAA Tournament 2012: South Region Is Stacked

The Gonzaga Bulldogs are preparing for the 2012 NCAA Tournament. They will have their work cut out for them if they hope to make it deep into the event, but they can be thankful for one thing: at least they're not in the South Region.

SB Nation basketball editor Mike Rutherford offers five points of analysis regarding the bracket announcements. One of his points is that the South region bracket offers the toughest and most stacked set of teams than any other region in the tournament.

Kentucky is the tournament’s No. 1 overall seed, so it stands to reason that UK’s road to the Final Four should be the smoothest. That certainly doesn’t appear to be the case, as the Wildcats have drawn a region oozing with talented teams capable of giving them fits.

Having Baylor (which is loaded with NBA prospects) and Duke (which is Duke) at the top is bad enough, but the strength of this region is most apparent in the middle. There is no better 8/9 matchup than the South’s of Royce White and Iowa State going up against the defending national champions from Connecticut. Either of those squads could give UK trouble in the third round, but the Huskies – who boast likely lottery picks in Jeremy Lamb and Andre Drummond and have a handful of players who were part of a win over the Wildcats in the 2011 Final Four – are particularly worthy of fear.

Click through to the article for a full look at his early analysis. It's very insightful and well worth the read.

NCAA Tournament Snubs 2012: Washington Didn't Help Themselves When They Had the Chance

I realize the the title of the article starts with the word "snubs" then ends in acknowledgement that Washington really didn't do themselves any favors when it came to a berth in the NCAA Tournament. Regardless, here we are - UW is the first 'big six' power conference champion to miss the NCAA tournament- that seems like a snub. But, I can also understand the reasoning to leave them out.

I saw an article on Saturday that said it best - Eamonn Brennan of ESPN.com, in his Bubble Watch column, wrote:

It's official: Washington fans have absolutely no right to complain about the Huskies' "lack of respect" in regard to their at-large NCAA tournament chances. When you have this resume -- when your best nonconference win is UC Santa Barbara and your best league win (and the only top-75 victory) is at home against Oregon -- you simply cannot afford to end the Pac-12 tournament the way the Huskies ended theirs.

Thursday's second-round loss to Oregon State may well spell "NIT" for the Huskies. They have the regular-season conference title going for them and ... that's pretty much it. They're 1-8 against the RPI top 50, 4-8 against the top 100, 6-8 away from their own building, with an RPI outside the top 50. Nothing about this resume screams NCAA tournament team.

The Huskies could have given themselves an automatic bid by winning the Pac-12 Tournament for the 3rd year in a row. Instead, they bowed out in the 2nd round - their first game after a first round bye - to Oregon State. The 9-seed. They could have helped themselves by beating a red-hot UCLA team the game before that to close out the regular season.

After losing to Oregon State and being eliminated from the Pac-12 Tournament, the Dawgs could have used a little help from some other teams. That, well, just didn't happen. First, Cal lost. Then, Arizona lost. This pushed UW even further off the bubble. That was followed with a Colorado win for the Pac-12 Title and automatic berth, then a St. Bonaventure win for an A-10 win and automatic berth, and the Huskies' fate was pretty much sealed. The Bonnies were another bubble team that the Dawgs could have hoped to beat out, but in their win they got an automatic bid and Xavier took another much-needed spot in the Dance as an eventual 10-seed.

As my esteemed colleague Scott Coleman wrote earlier today, "as far as the "eye test" goes, the Huskies certainly passed the test as an NCAA Tourney team. They ranked in the top-40 in terms of points-per-game and dominated the boards, ranking No. 5 overall in rebounds. UW features a ton of NBA talent as well; Tony Wroten is arguably the best player in the conference and can take over a game offensively, and Terrance Ross has the potential to become a star at the shooting guard position at the next level. C.J. Wilcox is a lethal shooter from outside, Aziz N'Diaye protects the rim with his size and length, and point guard Abdul Gaddy just makes everything flow on offense."

They just couldn't put it all together, and now look to their conciliatory prize - the NITs. As a No. 1 seed, Washingon will face No. 8 seed Texas-Arlington on Tuesday at 7:00 PM PT.

Romar on the Huskies path to the NIT:

"Mentally I've kind of been preparing myself for this a little more. Now I'm even moved on a little bit or as much as you can right now because you still hold for the one little bit of hope that maybe they'll call your name. It didn't happen. I say all of that to say, there's more games. We get to play more games. We get to be with this team longer. Darnell Gant and whoever else is not going to be here next year. We all get to be together a little longer. There's a lot of players coming back next year. We can continue to grow. It's something that I'm looking forward to doing."

March Madness Bracket 2012: Gonzaga Basketball's Path To The NCAA Tournament

The Gonzaga Bulldogs have been a fixture in the NCAA tournament for the last decade. Their journey to the No. 7 seed in the East Regional 2012 was no different.

The squad is led by their talented freshman Kevin Pangos, who was an excellent passer, shooter and solid point guard overall. Elias Harris and Robert Sacre provided the rebounding presence inside, with excellent support from Gary Bell and Sam Dower.

Gonzaga had only one bad loss at USF, but otherwise lost to all the teams they were expected to lose to, dropping road games to St. Mary's and BYU while losing a hard-fought home contest against Michigan State. Gonzaga had to play only two games in the WCC tournament (getting two byes), beating BYU decisively before falling to St. Mary's in overtime in the tournament championship game.

Gonzaga ends up with the 7th seed, and will play No. 10 West Virginia.

NCAA Bracket 2012: Printable Bracket Available At SB Nation

The Gonzaga Bulldogs made the NCAA Tournament field after discovering their fate on Selection Sunday. GU took home a No. 7 seed and will face West Virginia in the first round of the East regional. WVU has a better "home court" advantage than Gonzaga, whose fans will have to travel to cross-country to Pittsburgh to see their team play the Mountaineers. The Bulldogs are sure to find a hostile crowd.

The Washington Huskies face a long offseason after learning they missed the cut to make it into the Tournament. Despite being regular season Pac-12 champions, their low RPI and lack of success on the road and against Top-50 teams ultimately kept them from the field. They are the first "Big Six" conference champions to miss out on the Dance.

With the opening-round matchups set for Tuesday this year -- including four play-in games -- get your picks in early. Will Gonzaga make another magical run? Print out SB Nation's bracket and get to work.

Bracketology 2012: Washington's Tournament Lives Hanging By A Thread

With the St. Bonaventure Bonnies dismantling the Xavier Musketeers 67-56 to take the title in the Atlantic 10 Championship game Sunday afternoon, the chances of the Washington Huskies making the 2012 NCAA tournament became that much worse, leaving them dangerously close to falling off the bubble.

Washington was looking great in the Pac-12 Championship until they fell apart late in the game against the Oregon State Beavers Thursday, leaving them on the outside looking in in most bracketologists predictions, including SB Nation's Chris Dobbertean.

The selection committee for the tournament usually shines in the favor of regular season conference champions, especially from the big six conferences, which is one big thing they have going for them. But with their weak schedule (no victoires over teams with an RPI of 50 or higher) and high number of other schools with similar outputs, you can easily make a case for them not making the tourney as well.

With the Selection Show only a few hours away, just where will the Huskies end up? The NCAA or NIT tournament?

For more discussion on the Huskies, head over to the UW Dawg Pound. For more on Bracketology and college basketball in general make sure you check out SB Nation's dedicated college basketball hub. Pretty please. With sugar on top.

Bracketology 2012: Gonzaga Drops To No. 8 Seed, Washington Out In Latest Bracket

Chris Dobbertean has been bust crunching the numbers and getting the order set for his latest bracketology for the 2012 NCAA Tournament, and unfortunately for the greater Northwest area their teams are dropping like flies as the possible squads making the big dance may have whittled down to just one.

That one team would be the Gonzaga Bulldogs, who remain a lock to make the tournament in the latest bracket. Interestingly enough they've fallen two spots since our last bracket was published, dropping from the No. 6 seed previously down to a No. 8 seed currently, possibly signaling a bit of a lack in confidence in the Bulldogs this season.

As for the Washington Huskies, their loss to Oregon State in the Pac-12 tournament will likely be the deal-sealer on their cinderella status, currently sitting as one of the 'next four out' sitting behind seven other teams that would make the tourney ahead of them. What a difference a game makes.
