Seahawks activate Walter Thurmond from PUP list

Matt Sullivan

After sitting out the Seahawks' first nine games of the season, cornerback Walter Thurmond was activated from the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list Wednesday. The third-year player suffered a broken leg during the 2011 season.

The Seattle Seahawks defense got just a bit stronger on Wednesday, when cornerback Walter Thurmond was activated from the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list.

Thurmond, a third-year player out of Oregon, returned after missing time with a broken leg suffered during the 2011 season. Per the rules of the NFL's Collective Bargaining Agreement, Thurmond had to be activated within three weeks of his first practice, which came on Oct. 22. That deadline was this past Monday.

Thurmond's return could be a huge boost for a Seahawks' secondary that is already one of the strongest in the NFL.

On the season, Seattle is ranked No. 7 in pass defense, allowing just 206 yards per game through the air. Going against the Jets on Sunday will only help Thurmond ease into things. New York is ranked 26th in the NFL in passing yardage, putting up just 207 yards per game through the air.

To make room for Thurmond, Seattle released receiver Charly Martin. Once Martin cleared waivers, he was then added back to the Seahawks practice roster.
