WIAA 4A Boys Basketball Championship Score: Gonzaga Prep Smothers Curtis In Third Quarter

Gonzaga Prep brought its defense to the state championship at the Tacoma Dome on Saturday night. In the third quarter, the Bullpups clamped down, holding the Curtis Vikings to just five points in the quarter to take a 44-27 lead into the final frame. Gonzaga Prep outscored Curtis 15-5 in the third quarter, all but sealing the game.

Curtis hit just one field goal in the quarter as the Vikings couldn’t find openings in Gonzaga Preps stifling, pressure-filled defense. DaVonte Lacy, who led all scorers with 12 points in the first half, scored just two in the third quarter, both coming on free throws. Chris Sarbaugh, a Gonzaga recruit, has done an outstanding job on Lacy, shadowing him wherever he goes.

For the Bullpups, it’s been all about ball movement and crisp passing. Sarbaugh has keyed the Gonzaga Prep offense, creating for himself as others as the Bullpups stretch the lead. In the first half, Sarbaugh and Parker Kelly led the way for Gonzaga Prep with nine points apiece, and the two have picked up right where they left off, a big reason the Bullpups are running away in the state finals.

With one quarter to go in Tacoma, it’s a 17-point lead for Gonzaga Prep. For more on the tournament, check out our WIAA boys basketball championships StoryStream.
