WIAA 4A Boys Basketball Championship Score And Stats: Gonzaga Prep Shuts Down DaVonte Lacy To Win 4A Title

The Gonzaga Prep Bullpups got defensive on Saturday night at the Tacoma Dome, using a lock-down defense to slow down Curtis star DaVonte Lacy en route to a 61-41 win and state championship. It was all Lacy for the Vikings, but Gonzaga Prep held the Washington State signee to 24 points while clamping down on the rest of the Curtis offense, especially in the second half.

After taking an 11-point lead into the half, Gonzaga Prep blew the game open in the third quarter, holding Curtis to just five points in the quarter to take a 17-point lead into the fourth. The Bullpups cruised down the stretch, triggering a celebration as Spokane swept the 4A boys and girls championships.

SB Nation’s Wescott Eberts singled-out the Gonzaga Prep defense, praising Gonzaga-bound senior Chris Sarbaugh for his efforts on both ends of the floor.

Sarbuagh helped hold Lacy in check during the quarter by playing tenacious defense. The rest of the Bullpups did, too, as Curtis managed only a single field goal in the third as Gonzaga Prep pulled ahead and never looked back.

Parker Kelly led the way for the Bullpups with 24 points. Sarbaugh added 17 points as the two formed a formidable one-two punch for the Bullpups. The Bullpups faced a difficult task over the course of the tournament, getting by Kentridge, Garfield and Curtis on their way to a state title.

WIAA 4A Boys Basketball Championship Score: Gonzaga Prep Smothers Curtis In Third Quarter

Gonzaga Prep brought its defense to the state championship at the Tacoma Dome on Saturday night. In the third quarter, the Bullpups clamped down, holding the Curtis Vikings to just five points in the quarter to take a 44-27 lead into the final frame. Gonzaga Prep outscored Curtis 15-5 in the third quarter, all but sealing the game.

Curtis hit just one field goal in the quarter as the Vikings couldn’t find openings in Gonzaga Preps stifling, pressure-filled defense. DaVonte Lacy, who led all scorers with 12 points in the first half, scored just two in the third quarter, both coming on free throws. Chris Sarbaugh, a Gonzaga recruit, has done an outstanding job on Lacy, shadowing him wherever he goes.

For the Bullpups, it’s been all about ball movement and crisp passing. Sarbaugh has keyed the Gonzaga Prep offense, creating for himself as others as the Bullpups stretch the lead. In the first half, Sarbaugh and Parker Kelly led the way for Gonzaga Prep with nine points apiece, and the two have picked up right where they left off, a big reason the Bullpups are running away in the state finals.

With one quarter to go in Tacoma, it’s a 17-point lead for Gonzaga Prep. For more on the tournament, check out our WIAA boys basketball championships StoryStream.

WIAA 4A Boys Basketball Championship Score: Gonzaga Prep Leads Curtis In The Third

The Gonzaga Prep Bullpups jumped out to an early lead at the Tacoma Dome on Saturday night, holding the Curtis Vikings at bay in the WIAA boys basketball championship. In the third quarter, the Bullpups have an 11-point lead after defense dominated the first half.

Parker Kelly and Chris Sarbaugh handled the scoring load for the Bullpups in the first half, each scoring nine points. Sarbaugh had two assists and a steal, with Kelly adding two rebounds and a steal of his own. Sarbaugh will play his college ball down the street from Gonzaga Prep and nearby Gonzaga.

For the Vikings, it’s been all about DaVonte Lacy. The Washington State bound senior runs the Curtis offense, but found trouble scoring against a tough Gonzaga Prep defense at times. Lacy finished the half with 12 points to lead all scorers, but the Vikings shot just 39-percent from the field as a team, missing all three of their three-point attempts in the half.

In the third quarter, Gonzaga Prep has the advantage, leading Curtis, 39-25. For more on the game, check out the rest of our WIAA boys basketball tournament StoryStream.

WIAA 4A Boys Basketball Tournament: Gary Bell Jr. Not Enough As Gonzaga Prep Advances

Gary Bell Jr. scored 22 points for the Kentridge Chargers, but it wasn't enough as Gonzaga Prep held on for a 72-60 quarterfinal win at the Tacoma Dome. Bell, who will play his college ball at Gonzaga, ironically, has been the key for the Chargers this season, carrying the team into the playoffs and to the Tacoma Dome for the state tournament. But Gonzaga Prep was able to hold him in check, keeping the Chargers at bay during a second half run that put the game away.

The Bulldogs had a 22-point scorer of their own as Chris Sarbaugh led the way in the win. Parker Kelly added 20 points in a three-pronged attack for Gonzaga Prep in the win. Mason Kelley has a full recap of the game, and all the 4A action, up at The Seattle Times.

Gonzaga Prep's road doesn't get any easier as they move on to face Tony Wroten Jr. and Garfield in the semifinals on Friday at 5:30 p.m. Kentridge heads to the loser's bracket to battle Puyallup at 10:30 a.m. on Friday. The Vikings fell to Garfield in a high-scoring affair on Thursday, 90-80.
