Arizona State Vs. Washington State Final Score: Connor Halliday Leads Cougars To 37-27 Upset Win

On a night where the Arizona State Sun Devils were entertaining fantasies of reclaiming first place in the Pac-12 South, the Washington State Cougars decided to field a freshman quarterback. The end result was a debut performance for the ages as Washington State completed the upset and secured a 37-27 victory over ASU.

After starting quarterback Marshall Lobbestael went 1-for-3 in the first quarter, he was lifted in favor of Connor Halliday, making his first ever appearance in a game. He made an immediate impression with an 85 yard touchdown pass to Marquess Wilson on his first play, and led the Cougars to a 300 yard first half.

Halliday and his receivers never let up, however, and it was a game of long passes and circus catches as the Cougars offense absolutely carved up the ASU secondary. The Washington State defense was no slouch either, holding the Sun Devils to just one touchdown in the entire second half as the Cougars took control for good.

Halliday will be the major story out of this one, as he finished the game 27-for-36 with an astounding 494 passing yards, no interceptions and four touchdowns. Marquess Wilson also had a spectacular game, finishing with eight catches for 223 yards and three touchdowns. Isiah Barton had the other touchdown catch for the Cougars, and finished the game with 155 yards on seven catches. Carl Winston led WSU rushers with 52 yards on 14 carries and a touchdown.

This was a huge win for the Cougars and if Halliday can continue this type of performance, the future would seem to be bright for Washington State.

Things are more interesting and close than ASU expected. Halliday and Wilson are keeping the Washington State crowd engaged and red-hot.The Cougars came up with an enormous red zone stop of the Sun Devils, forcing a turnover on downs after two consecutive plays where a first down was within inches.

There's a full quarter left to play, and in the Pac-12 anything can happen. Still, the Cougars are getting a big boost from Halliday and hoping he can keep things close.

Washington State Vs. Arizona State Score Update: Connor Halliday And Cougars Trail 20-16 At Halftime

The Arizona State Sun Devils were hoping to get their season back on the right track as they traveled to take on the Washington State Cougars. Instead, they're finding a surprisingly tough Cougars team led by their surprising rookie quarterback. At halftime, the Cougars trail 20-16.

Connor Halliday entered the game in the first quarter and immediately made an impact with an 85 yard touchdown pass on his first collegiate snap. He added a second touchdown pass to Marquess Wilson late in the second quarter, this one a modest 18 yarder to put the Cougars on top 16-13. Through the first half, Halliday is 10-for-16 with 225 passing yards, no interceptions and two touchdowns.

The Sun Devils did not go down quietly after surrendering the lead, and a costly penalty for roughing the passer allowed ASU to move into the red zone. As time wound down, Arizona State running back Cameron Marshall managed to power his way into the end zone to help the Sun Devils recapture the lead.

Washington State Vs. Arizona State Score Update: Cougars Trail 10-6 In Second Quarter

The Washington State Cougars are hosting the Arizona State Sun Devils, and from the opening kickoff, the game has proved to be exciting. The Sun Devils lead 10-6 in the second quarter.

Jamal Miles managed to return the opening kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown on the first first play of the game, giving the Sun Devils a 7-0 lead.

Not to be outdone in the theatrics department, Cougars freshman quarterback Connor Halliday came into the game and aired out a bomb to Marquess Wilson that resulted in an 85 yard touchdown pass. The Cougars failed the two-point conversion, but Halliday's first-ever collegiate play brought WSU to within 7-6. On the following possession, Halliday was leading another Cougars drive before Rickey Galvin fumbled the ball back to ASU at midfield.

So far, the Sun Devils have chosen to almost entirely avoid the rushing game. They have six total rushing yards on eight attempts.
