The Oregon Ducks looked like they could be in trouble when they were caught in a one point halftime deficit to the California Golden Bears. But Oregon does what they've always done against their opponents in the third quarter, which is wreck it up.
Oregon started the third quarter with a solid, methodical drive. LaMichael James picked up 30 yards on seven carries, including a first down conversion on third down. Kenjon Barner picked up ten yards on three carries, and converted a 3rd down. Darron Thomas then found Josh Huff for a nine yard gain, and helped draw a pass interference penalty when Huff and his defender got caught together. Then the Oregon QB found De'Anthony Thomas on an out route which he took in to give Oregon a lead they wouldn't relinquish.
When Cal was forced to punt the ball at midfield on their subsequent drive, Oregon began making big strikes. LaMichael James put up 18 rushes on two carries, then Kenjon Barner broke through the Cal defensive contain for a 68 yard rush that put the Ducks up two scores. After Cal was forced to go three-and-out, a Darron Thomas 25 yard rush got the Ducks back into Cal territory, and the signal-caller dropped back from Oregon pressure and found De'Anthony once again for a gamebreaking touchdown.
The final Oregon scoring drive was more of the same. Darron found De'Anthony, and LaMichael got close to the goal-line on a 15 yard gain. James's arm injury came on the next play, but Thomas did find Lavasier Tuinei to close out the scoring.
Oregon improved to 4-1 on the season in 2-0 in the Pac-12. A crucial home test awaits next week against the Arizona St. Sun Devils.

The Oregon Ducks are blowing apart the California Golden Bears right now, but they might have suffered a devastating loss that could severely impact their chances at winning the Pac-12. Oregon leading rusher LaMichael James may have suffered a gruesome arm injury that could potentially take him out for a significant period of time.

James had pretty much been Oregon's offense all night long for the first half, keeping the Ducks afloat before all the other weapons started going. Without LaMichael's big play ability, it's hard to see how Oregon will be able to still manage the explosiveness on offense to continue to produce big-time. Darron Thomas and the passing game will have to produce a lot earlier to keep Oregon afloat if James is out for an extended period of time.

After two quick touchdown scores from the Oregon Ducks, it appeared the Cal Bears would be blown out at Autzen Stadium. Instead, the Bears played stellar defense in the second quarter and have used three field goals and a 12-yard touchdown pass from Zach Maynard to Keenan Allen for a touchdown and 15-14 lead.
For Oregon, LaMichael James has been unstoppable with 14 carries for 166 yards, including a 52-yard touchdown on UO's second play of the game. De'Anthony Thomas also added a score with a 17-yard touchdown rush of his own.
What has caused the Ducks to stall on multiple drives is Darron Thomas' inconsistent play. The quarterback is 8-for-19 for 101 yards and an interception. That interception came on the final drive of the half for Oregon and nearly led to a Cal field goal.
For California, place-kicker Giorgio Tavecchio has been the hero, going 3-for-4 on field goals, including one from 54 yards away. His lone miss -- one that came as the clock expired in the first half -- was partially blocked and fell a few yards short.
Quarterback Zach Maynard is 11-for-24 with the afore mentioned touchdown pass. Running back Isi Sofele has 93 rushing yards on just 10 attempts.

In a crucial Pac-12 battle between two northern division teams, the Oregon Ducks have used two touchdown runs and stellar red zone defense to gain an early 14-6 lead over the Cal Bears.
California led off the game with a solid drive before stalling in the red zone. Using a wide variety of screen passes and an unexpected diamond formation, the Bears capped off their drive with a 27-yard field goal for an early 3-0 lead.
Oregon took control of the ball and the LaMichael James show immediately took over Eugene. The elusive running back broke a 53-yard touchdown run with his blistering speed as he raced down the sideline. It took UO just two plays and thirty seconds to take the lead on their drive.
The Bears put together another solid drive on their second possession of the game, this time methodically moving the ball down the field, but once again the offense stalled without a touchdown. Giorgio Tavecchio nailed a 38-yard field goal to cut Oregon's lead to 7-6.
The high-flying rushing attack proved beneficial once again for the Ducks as they raced down the field in their next possession. An eight play, 70-yard drive was wrapped up with a De'Anthony Thomas touchdown of 17-yards. The extra point made it a 14-6 game as the first quarter of play.
Early in the second quarter, Oregon continues to lead 14-6 and is driving the ball down the field once again.

If the Oregon Ducks want to get it together and blow out the California Golden Bears on offense Thursday, they're going to need help from their (at this point) unimpressive receiving corps. Oregon knew they'd have trouble replacing Jeff Maehl, but they didn't know it would be THIS much trouble.
Lavasier Tuinei and Rahsaan Vaughn are doing okay, but the other Oregon outside options have been worse than pedestrian. According to this analysis at Pacific Takes, Justin Hoffman and Will Murphy are two of the least successful receivers in the conference in catching passes. Both Hoffman and Murphy are going to have one-on-one opportunities to make plays, and they need to convert if they want to get it open.
Up to this point, Oregon has gotten most of their production from tight end David Paulson and running backs LaMichael James and De'Anthony Thomas. If they want to spread the Cal defense out and make them chase Oregon all over the field, Thomas is going to have to connect with his receivers to avoid a repeat of last year's near-debacle in Berkeley.
