Adrian Hanauer Insists Seattle Sounders Are Not In Talks For Diego Forlan

Seattle Sounders FC have released a statement from general manager Adrian Hanauer regarding the possibility of World Cup star and Uruguayan international Diego Forlan joining the club:

"We have watched and admired the play of Diego Forlan for a number of years, and we would be thrilled to have a player of his quality join Sounders FC. However, there is no substance to these current reports that Sounders FC is negotiating with Atletico Madrid and the player, to bring him to Seattle.

Well, darn. Sounders fans always knew this was a long shot, but the report on Spanish radio station Cadena SER made it seem almost possible that Seattle would land such a big fish. Granted, the team already has three designated players in Fredy Montero, Alvaro Fernandez and Blaise Nkufo, but when the club has cash, why not flash it? Plus, it's always nice when MLS clubs are discussed internationally, and it certainly can't hurt the Sounders' reputation.

Diego Forlan Rumors Represent A Change For Seattle

SB Nation’s Sounder At Heart addressed the Diego Forlan rumors, examining what they mean to the sports landscape in Seattle. We’ve seen our share of high-profile athletes leave the city in their prime, leaving many to wonder why Seattle is a stepping stone, not a destination. Even just rumors Forlan wants to play in Seattle represent a shift in attitude, and are a positive sign for the Seattle Sounders going forward.

As a Seattle sports fan I’m used to Ken Griffey Jr. in 1999, or Randy Johnson in 1998, or A-Rod in 2000, or Shawn Kemp of 1997, or Gary Payton of 2003. Stars don’t come here by choice. They leave. Those that do come are young, and will leave when they can, like our own Steve Zakuani, Fredy Montero, Alvaro and probably many more.

[…]

The Sounders though are one of the premier organizations in their league. This is an organization of HAVES. In the remaining pro leagues here in Seattle, are we really going to think that they are one of the top 25% of destinations for peak athletes?

The fact that the Sounders are seeing their name attached to big name players in their prime is, more-or-less, unheard of the MLS. The league itself isn’t on-par with top-tier soccer leagues throughout the world. Yet here the Sounders are, entering their third-year of existence in the league, making waves and gaining global attention.

It’s attention we, as fans, could get used to as we watch the sport grow in Seattle.

Spanish Radio Reports Atletico Madrid Have Received An Offer From Seattle Sounders For Diego Forlan

Diego Forlán to the Seattle Sounders? The rumors have been floating about for awhile, clogging up Twitter, drifting through random blogs desperate for hits. They've yet to be addressed in this space because they've seemed absolutely ridiculous, but today, Chris Reiko reports that Spanish radio station Cadena SER are talking about Atlético Madrid's "attractive offer" from Seattle Sounders:

Diego Forlan Uruguayan striker of Atletico Madrid had received an attractive offer from #MLS #Sounders -By Spanish radio "Cadena Ser" #SSFCless than a minute ago via TweetDeck

To be fair, I have no idea how credible Cadena SER are. Are they a tabloid radio station? Do such things exist? Are they reporting on sensational rumors? The idea of a legitimate World Cup star coming to Seattle still seems far-fetched.

Yet at the same time, Sounders could make sense. Forlán was an utter disappointment at Manchester United, as World Cup announcers never let us forget. Perhaps he doesn't want a return to the Premier League. Atleti are poor at the moment, to put it mildly, sitting sixth in La Liga and failing to defend their Europa League title. Plus, Seattle already has a Uruguayan in Álvaro Fernández, so maybe Forlán has actually heard about the Sounders.

Only time will tell, of course, and time will likely show us that this rumor is laughable, but for now, it's nice to ponder the arrival of Abs.
