Former Husky Isaiah Stanback Tears Achilles

Isaiah Stanback's season is over. He tore his Achilles tendon in today's practice, marking the second torn Achilles suffered by a Seahawk in less than a week. Linebacker Anthony Heygood tore his Achilles on Thursday. Stanback's injury ends what had been a promising start to his Seahawks career.

Stanback started his Huskies career as a wide receiver before putting in two and half seasons at quarterback from 2004 to 2006. He was a slash player, that passed a little and ran a lot. Stanback was drafted in the fourth round of the 2007 NFL draft by the Dallas Cowboys. He saw a little work at wide receiver and a little work on special teams, but never established himself.

Dallas released Stanback in 2009 in its final move to 53. He signed on with the Patriots and stuck around for a season before being released in May of 2010. He returned home when Seattle claimed Stanback off waivers.

Stanback was competing for a prominent position on special teams. In the wake of Sean Morey's retirement, Stanback was tapped to be a gunner and perhaps even a special teams captain. His good speed, good athleticism and powerful build made him a natural candidate. Stanback was showing good potential in practice, but his season is now over. Seattle will place Stanback on injured reserve, allowing him to return next season. For the Seahawks, Ben Obomanu is again the most likely candidate for gunner and special teams captain.
