Seahawks' Julius Jones Takes Paycut, Avoids Being Released

Yesterday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Julius Jones would be a late casualty of roster cuts, with a move coming as soon as today. In the wake of that report, Jones restructured his contract and took a pay cut, saving his job with the Seahawks.

Schefter confirmed today that Jones will indeed be on the final 53-man roster because of his willingness to take less money.

Seahawks RB Julius Jones saved his job by taking a paycut. The plan, which multiple people confirmed, was to cut him. Paycut saved job.less than a minute ago via ÜberTwitter

It's clear the Seahawks are looking to get money off the books after releasing T.J. Houshmandzadeh and eating more than $6 million because of it. Luckily for Jones, he's still employed, albeit at a much lower salary.

Adam Schefter breaks the news that Matt Leinart was released by the Arizona Cardinals this morning.

Filed to ESPN: Cardinals have told Matt Leinart they will release him today. Max Hall will be No. 2 QB.less than a minute ago via ÜberTwitter

Pay attention to the Leinart situation as it develops. With the Seahawks cutting 3rd string quarterback J.P. Losman, they may still be in the market for another quarterback. Patrick Ramsey and Matt Leinart would both fit the bill.

Report: Seahawks Release Quarterback J.P Losman

Cuts are starting to trickle in as the 1 p.m. deadline approaches for final rosters to be set. Liz Matthews of 710 ESPN reports the Seahawks will release quarterback J.P. Losman, perhaps to make space for another quarterback.

QB JP Losman has been released. This potentially opens the door for the Seahawks to sign fellow Tulane alum Patrick Ramsey or take a closer look at Matt Leinart should he be released by the Cardinals.

Report: Nick Reed Reaches Injury Settlement With Seahawks

Jason La Canfora of NFL.com reports on Twitter that the Seattle Seahawks will cut ties with defensive lineman Nick Reed on Saturday.

Seattle has reached an injury settlement with DL Nick Reed, a 2009 draft pick. Will announce the transaction Saturdayless than a minute ago via Twitter for BlackBerry®

Reed recently had arthroscopic knee surgery and was expected to miss a few weeks.

An injury settlement functions like a release because it severs the ties between player and team.  It does, however, provide monetary compensation to the player and allows him to pursue opportunities with other teams.

The move comes as something of a surprise because Reed was recently projected to make the 53 man roster by FieldGulls.com.

Clayton: Houshmandzadeh Move Likely Means Julius Jones Will Be Cut

Seahawks running back Julius Jones may be cut in order to save money after the Seahawks trade or release receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh. On the 710 ESPN's Kevin Calabro Show, John Clayton reported that the Seahawks will need to free up money somehow, and Jones is a likely to be cut because of it.

John Clayton says that paying $7 million dollars for no Housh, means the Seahawks will try to move some money, and will cut Julius Jonesless than a minute ago via web

So the Seahawks roster purge continues as we head towards Saturday's 53-man roster deadline. At this point, it feels like none of the Seahawks are safe from the Carrol and Schneider rampage.

O'Neil: Veterans To Keep An Eye On As Cut Deadline Approaches

With the final preseason game a day away, and the roster deadline looming, Seattle Times reporter Danny O’Neil takes a look at some veterans to keep an eye in tomorrow's exhibition against the Oakland Raiders.

WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh: He is the most high profile, a player who led the Seahawks in catches last season with 79 and has caught 373 passes over the previous four seasons. He is scheduled to earn $7 million for 2010, a salary that is guaranteed.

On Monday on ESPN 710 AM, his future was discussed, and Brock Huard pointed out the possibility that he might not fit, he is ideally a slot receiver and if he doesn’t buy into that role, would Seattle consider moving on? Huard did not say Seattle would nor did he advocate that the Seahawks should. He pointed out it is a consideration.

The whispers about Houshmandzadeh’s role with the team have been growing louder in the last week, with some wondering if he will be a casualty in the final round of cuts. It still would be shocking, to say the least, if the Hawks do cut the veteran receiver on Saturday.

Others O’Neil points out: Julius Jones, Owen Schmitt, and Jordan Babineaux. With Thursday the final chance for players to make their mark in a game-situation, expect to see plenty of guys fighting for a spot on the 53-man roster against the Raiders.

NFL Roster Cuts: Seahawks Make Roster Moves, Now At 75 Players

The Seahawks are finished with their first round of cuts, making five roster moves to get down to the required 75 player limit.

Greg Johns has the scoop.

Guard Gregg Peat, wide receiver Kole Heckendorf and kicker Clint Stitser have been cut, along with former CFL defensive end Ricky Foley.

The first round of roster moves is minor, with players that had no chance of making the final roster being waived in the preliminary cuts. The Seahawks will continue to trim the roster before Saturday’s final roster deadline.

NFL Roster Cuts: Seahawks Reportedly Cut Ricky Foley

The Seahawks have begin trimming their roster to meet the NFL-mandated 75 man limit by Tuesday’s deadline. The Seahawks roster currently stands at 80, leaving them with five cuts to make before the deadline.

According to a report from canadafootballchat, Ricky Foley is among the players cut. (via Seattle PI reporter Greg Johns)

The Seahawks haven’t announced the five roster moves they’ll need to make by 1 p.m. on Tuesday, but a Canadian website is reporting that former CFL standout Rickey Foley is among those released in the first cutdown.

The Seahawks will continue to make cuts before releasing their final 53-man roster by Saturday’s NFL cut deadline.

NFL Roster Cuts: Seattle Seahawks Cut List Central

The NFL's cutdown week has begun.  To summarize: every team needs to trim its preseason roster to 53 players by Saturday. Analysts say this should be a relatively painless process for the Seattle Seahawks and their general manager John Schneider, but it may come with a surprise or two.

Greg Johns writes on SeattlePI.com that safety probably represents the "toughest decision."

Sure things: Earl Thomas, Lawyer Milloy.
On the bubble: Kam Chancellor, Jordan Babineaux, Jamar Adams.
Doubtful: Kevin Ellison.
Analysis: Might be toughest decision facing coaches, with either Chancellor, Babineaux or Adams needing to go. Babineaux is the solid veteran, Adams a developing youngster and Chancellor an intriguing fifth-round draft pick. Adams or Chancellor could go on practice squad. My guess is Adams is odd-man out, as they won't want to risk losing Chancellor. I've been surprised Ellison hasn't gotten more of a shot as a guy who started nine games for Chargers as a rookie last year, but he's been third-team all camp.

The team also faces decisions at tight end and on the offensive line, where a series of injuries, including an ankle injury to Russell Okung, has left some gaps.

We'll have full coverage of Seattle Seahawks cuts throughout the week.
